Üsküdar University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Electrical and Electronics Department Head Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker evaluated the harms of artificial radiation caused by electronic devices that we frequently use in daily life.

Şeker made the following assessments about the harms of radiation:

Noting that all devices using electrical energy perform their normal functions, they emit electromagnetic fields and non-ionizing radiation as a side effect. Dr. Selim Şeker said, “This causes thermal and non-thermal harmful effects on humans, plants, animals and devices. The effect on humans is not much different from the effects on plants or animals, since 70-80% of them all consist of water and dielectric material. Apart from this, some damages such as cancer appear after 15-20 years medically.

One or more antennas in each wireless device emit Radio Frequency Radiation (RFR) at different frequencies. A “frequency” is the number of RFR waves that pass a given point each second. One Hertz (Hz) is one wave per second. Bluetooth usually uses 2.4 GHz. A smartphone usually has at least 5 active RFR antennas. Wi-Fi 5 GHz emits 5 billion waves per second.

Electromagnetic waves (EMD) have two types of biological effects. The first part is the complaints such as headaches, burning eyes, fatigue, weakness and dizziness, which we can call the effects felt in a short time. In addition, results such as night sleeplessness, daytime sleepiness, resentment and not participating in society due to constant discomfort have also been reported in the literature.

Noting that protection from radiation emitted by devices used at home can be possible with some precautions, Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker listed his recommendations as follows:

As with the screens, the field strengths of electronic devices should be determined and presented to everyone, taking into account the usage distance and usage time.

For devices with medium or high field strength, the amount of field strength to be expected at which distance and the minimum limit distance values that should be provided in operating condition should be specified separately.

Attention should be paid to electrical appliances that create prolonged and severe areas, such as electric blankets and footpad heaters.

Depending on the limit values, it is a matter of debate whether to be content with the warnings or to remove some devices from the market altogether. However, the example of Switzerland's MPR-II recommendations on display shows that some standards can be brought and it is a possible solution to make users aware of these standards and leave the choice to them.

Do not use electric foot warmers, electric blankets and electric heated water beds, especially in sleeping areas.

Try to keep the distance from small electronic devices to at least 1 meter in the sleeping area. These features also apply to radio-alarm clocks and baby phones that are connected to the network.

High efficiency electronic devices should not be operated in the sleeping area. In special cases, a distance of 2 meters should be maintained.

By unplugging the devices that do not need to be used, we can protect ourselves from the effects of electric field and even magnetic field.

Make all cords and connected devices live and voltage free by adding an on/off switch to the plug portion of the extension cord.

Protect from harmful extended magnetic field effects caused by split cables, especially by using twisted cable as the transmission path in halogen lamp systems.

Make sure that electronic device manufacturers are sensitive and conscious about electronic pollution.

Man is exposed to the 50 square meter natural magnetic field of the earth at every moment and has adapted to this field strength throughout evolution. According to studies, the damage of this natural magnetic field can reach a level that can cause serious health problems due to the effect of magnetized metal parts, iron or other metal veins, which is even more likely in cases in the sleeping area. The radio-alarm clock emits not only variable electric and magnetic fields, but also static and inhomogeneous speaker pickups. For powerful stereos with large amps, this static field is quite high; For this reason, it should not be kept close to the bed.

prof. Dr. Selim Şeker made the following suggestions to avoid exposure to magnetic field effects in the sleeping area:

Metal parts such as iron bed sheets should be avoided in the sleeping area. In cases where it is used, methods such as grounding can be applied to weaken the magnetization. In addition, such applications can be high cost.

The radiator and similar metal parts may also be magnetized. For safety, 50 cm to 1 meter is sufficient. A sufficient decrease in field strength can be detected with the aid of a compass.

Speaker pickups should be kept about 1 meter away from the bed. A sufficient decrease in field strength can be detected with the aid of a compass.”
