When the Panama Railway was completed in 1855, the railway line connected the Atlantic and Pacific oceans for the first time. The 80 km rail facilitated the crossing of the Panama Canal for passengers traveling by sea on the East and West coasts of the United States. Panama Railways, which shipped freight to US postal ships as well as steam ship companies, was the most heavily loaded railroad line until the Panama Canal opened in 1914, and this line almost followed the same route as the channel.
