Vecihi Hürkuş (January 6, 1896, Istanbul - July 16, 1969), Turkish pilot, engineer and entrepreneur. Is one of the most important names of Turkish aviation history, is Turkey's first aircraft designer and manufacturer, has produced Turkey's first indigenous aircraft. Her father is Customs Inspector Faham Bey's mother Zeliha Niyir Hanım.
Vecihi Hürkuş voluntarily studied fine arts at Tophane Art School without participating in the Balkan War. He participated in World War I after the Balkan War and served as a plane engineer here at the Baghdad Front. Then he switched to the Caucasian Front, dropped a Russian plane on the Caucasian Front. After this incident, he became the title of "The First Turkish Pilot To Drop An Enemy Plane". He was wounded in the war and captured the Russians. He survived the Russians by swimming from Nargin Island.
Vecihi Hürkuş voluntarily participated in the War of Independence after getting rid of the Russians, made successful wars, and managed to drop a Greek plane. Then he saved İzmir Airport from the occupation, and in return for these achievements, he was awarded the Independence Medal and three separate Certificates.
The success stories of Vecihi Hürkuş are not limited to wars. Hürkuş's idea of making a airplane after he was given his own name to an adversary plane that crashed to Edirne by accident was followed by making the Vecihi K VI, which was qualified as the first Turkish-made airplane.
The first flight of the plane took place on January 28, 1925. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk founded the Turkish Aircraft Association's orientation (TTC), participating Hürkuş, in 1931, organized the first tour agencies on behalf of Turkey. This was followed by a second tour of the tour, which was held at the end of the same year, covering Ankara, Konya, Izmit and Istanbul.
On April 21, 1932, he founded the Civil Aviation School. In 1933, he designed the Vecihi K-XVI aircraft financed by Nuri Demirağ. In 1937, the Turkish Aeronautical Association sent Hürkuş to an engineering school in Germany to study engineering. Hürkuş, who returned to his country as a graduate in 1939, was not granted a license for the engineer due to the impossibility of being an engineer in two years.
Turkey's first civilian airline company, which is the Hürkuş who Hürkuş Airlines on 29 November 1954 established the fleet of aircraft that take off repairing THY's hand. However, due to reasons such as sabotage on their aircraft, canceling their flights without reason, he could not continue this project abundantly.
Having spent the last years of his life in great financial difficulties, Hürkuş died on July 16, 1969 at the Gülhane Military Medical Academy Hospital, where he was removed as a result of a brain hemorrhage.
