Near East University Hospital Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Department Specialist Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş says that snoring, which is seen in at least half of adults and a significant portion of children, is an important sleep disorder.
He stated that snoring is most common in adults due to nasal congestion, bone curvatures, nasal growths, allergies and chronic sinusitis.
Although it comes to the fore with the deterioration in sleep quality and disturbing the people around, snoring may be a harbinger of important health problems. Stating that the most common cause of snoring in adults is nasal congestion, Prof. Dr. Kadir Çağdaş Kazıkdaş also stated that bone curvatures, nasal growths, allergies and chronic sinusitis are among the causes that affect snoring. Stating that health problems such as the soft palate, small tongue growing and sagging accompanying these problems can aggravate the current picture, Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş stated that problems such as allergic rhinitis that narrow the upper airway from the nose to the vocal cords, larger than normal tonsils, structural anomalies in the lower and upper jaw, and excessive tongue may also cause snoring.
Snoring in Children Indication of Nasal Flesh
Stating that personal factors can also contribute to snoring, Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş stated that obesity, excessive alcohol and smoking, stomach reflux disease, drugs used for aging, depression and similar diseases, lack of sleep hygiene and shift working conditions can cause snoring as follows: “In children, snoring is often tonsils. or it is a sign of adenoid. Snoring in children is an indicator of narrowing of the airway. If the narrowing is very serious, the airway may be closed completely. This results in sleep breathing pause called apnea. "
In Which Situations Is Snoring Important?
Stating that snoring is a sleep disorder seen in at least half of adults and a significant portion of children, Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş stated that not every snoring is continuous or regular and therefore does not cause problems. The situation of the person snoring loudly every night should be considered from a medical point of view. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş said, "In addition, if the person experiences breathing pauses that we call apnea during sleep, wakes up without getting sleepy, or complains about drowsiness and concentration disorder during the day, he should consult a specialist physician as soon as possible." Emphasizing that snoring also reduces the quality of life of the people around, Prof. Dr. Kazıkdaş said, “The sound of snoring disturbs your bed or room, even those with whom you share the same roof, rather than you. According to a recent study, the snorer causes an average of an hour decrease in his wife's sleep time and leaves his wife sleepless. In addition, snoring may also be a symptom of breathing pauses during sleep ”.
Is Snoring Dangerous?
Stating that snoring causes problems such as getting tired in the morning, drowsiness during the day and concentration disorder at work, Prof. Dr. Kazıkdaş stated that all these threats to job security and cause attention disorders. He also said that pauses in breathing lasting more than ten seconds during sleep, called apnea, are the cause of more serious health problems in terms of heart and brain. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş reminded that sleep is actually a process where the body repairs and renews itself with the released hormones and prepares for the new day. Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş continued his words as follows: “During the day when awake, all the muscles surrounding the upper respiratory tract work and keep the airway open. However, as in all other systems, these muscles also relax during sleep. It causes partial or complete obstruction in the airway. In partial stenosis, patients complain of snoring, breath pauses are not common. When the airway is completely blocked and breathing stops, the oxygen level in the blood decreases. Unfortunately, when this condition becomes prolonged, it is the initiator of many diseases such as weight gain, depression, high blood pressure, heart and lung failure, heart rhythm and cerebral circulation disorders and impotence in men. "
Treatment and Diagnostic Methods
Stating that patients who apply to the doctor with snoring complaints, a detailed disease history should be taken first. Dr. Kazıkdaş stated that, if possible, obtaining information from people who witnessed snoring at home is the first step in diagnosis. Prof. Dr. Kazıkdaş stated that, with the detailed endoscopic and otolaryngology examination performed, the previously mentioned problems that cause stricture in the respiratory tract can be detected. Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş continued his statements as follows; “In our hospital, sleep endoscopy, which is accepted as the healthiest and most successful diagnosis method in the current literature, is being performed on snoring and apnea that can accompany. The artificial sleep we create in our patients during this procedure imitates night sleep for a short time and allows us to observe what kind of problem the patient encounters with snoring during the night. Alternatively, we can measure your sleep quality in the home environment with sleep tracking programs that can be downloaded to smartphones. Such programs have helped us a lot in understanding diseases, especially in recent years. I can proudly say that our scientific studies on this subject have been published on behalf of Near East University in American medical journals.
Methods Used in Snoring Surgery
Stating that all problems that narrow the upper airway from the nose to the vocal cords cause snoring, Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş stated that when the region or regions causing the problem are identified, any surgical procedure can be performed to help open the airway. Prof. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş continued his words about the diagnosis process as follows: “The most important thing is to make the correct diagnosis and to perform the necessary surgical intervention. Because there are more than 100 scientifically defined surgical methods even for palate and small tongue surgery. This shows us that there is not a single right about snoring surgery, and the selection of the right surgical method specific to each individual is of great importance in success.
Recovery Time
Stating that the recovery time after a successful rhinoplasty is 2 or 3 weeks on average, it can be 2 or 3 months in palate, tongue and small tongue surgeries for soft tissue. Dr. K. Çağdaş Kazıkdaş said, "The success of the operation on snoring is observed by our patients approximately from the 2nd week, since interventions are performed in multiple regions called combined surgery in our clinic.
