Presidents of Russia and Turkey in a ceremony attended by tapping into video conferencing, a full-scale Akkuyu NPP in the 3rd unit was given the start for the commencement of construction.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President Recep ceremony, while attending the video conference tapping into, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Dönmez, Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom General Director Alexey Likhachev and Akkuyu Nuclear Inc. General Manager Anastasia Zoteeva was present at the Akkuyu NGS field.
During the ceremony, the leaders of the two countries gave permission to start construction work, thus starting the "first concrete" pouring of the foundation of the third power unit.
Speaking at the ceremony, Rosatom General Manager Alexey Likhachev stated that the construction works are progressing rapidly and said, “Just three years after the start of the Akkuyu NPP construction, we are starting the full-scale construction work of the third power unit. Unprecedented speed in the implementation of the project kazanwas done. Therefore, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Turkey and local authorities for their extensive support to the project. However, with the support of the country's administrators, Turkish industrial companies and the public, we will be able to quickly and efficiently build the nuclear power plant, which will be one of the foundations of the country's energy security.”
Energy and Natural Resources Minister in his speech at the ceremony at Fatih Donmez, "Akkuyu NGS, 10% of Turkey's electricity needs will be met. Since the nuclear power plant is an environmentally friendly and uninterrupted source of electricity, it will also make an important contribution to the protection of our ecology. The project is a driving force for the development of the industry, economy, employment and will also contribute to the development of many related industries ”.
The Construction License of the third power unit was issued by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NDK) on 13 November 2020. Concrete is poured over the reinforced base, where the power unit will be located in the future, as part of the concreting of the foundation. The foundation is divided into 16 regions called "ano". The concrete casting process for each slab takes 24 hours. This process is carried out using a technological cover that protects the materials from precipitation. While the concrete height is 2,6 meters, the volume of each slab is equal to one thousand 100 cubic meters. The concrete mixture to be poured within the scope of basic concrete works has a volume of 17 thousand cubic meters.
Preparatory work was also carried out before the foundation concreting works. Within the scope of these works, water evacuation, excavation works, concrete cushion and water insulation construction, foundation reinforcement works and the installation of embedded parts were carried out.
The concrete casting process is carried out by the experts of the concrete batching plant as well as AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. TITAN 2 IC İÇTAŞ İNŞAAT, the main contractor of the construction, is also tightly supervised by the representatives of the joint venture and the French engineering company Assystem EOS, an independent building inspection organization.
Construction and assembly works are currently being carried out simultaneously in all four of the Akkuyu NGS power units. The concrete works of the foundation of the first power unit of Akkuyu NGS were completed in March 2019. While the installation of the core arrester, reactor dry guard, cantilever beam, support and pressure beam in the reactor section of the first power unit has been completed, the concrete of the inner walls of the inner shelter, the construction of the perimeter and inner walls, the third stage interior coating pre-assembly and assembly preparations continue. One of the main works planned for the first power unit will be the assembly of the reactor vessel.
The concrete casting process of the second unit of Akkuyu NGS, which started on April 8, 2020, was completed at the beginning of June 2020. Afterwards, the construction of the circular walls of the second power unit reactor building started. After the circular corridor concrete works, the installation of the core holder was completed and the first stage interior coating was installed. One of the most important works planned to be carried out this year within the scope of the construction of the power unit will be the assembly of the cantilever beam.
The documents within the scope of the application made to the NDK on 12 May 2020 to obtain the construction license of the Akkuyu NGS fourth power unit are currently being reviewed by the regulatory agency. Preparations are currently being made for the foundation excavation works at the site where the power unit facilities will be built.
