Biodiversity is being investigated in Izmit Bay

The effect of bottom sludge on biodiversity, which is a part of the Izmit Bay Bottom Sludge Cleaning project carried out by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, continues to be investigated. In this context, the second sampling study was carried out in 2024 with the research ship 'Yunus S' affiliated with Istanbul University Faculty of Aquatic Sciences. With the Izmit Bay Bottom Sludge Cleaning project, which is planned to last 5 years, a total of 8,5 million cubic meters of sludge will be removed from the bottom and disposed of. To date, the amount of mud removed from the sea has reached 60 percent dryness and reached 430 thousand cubic meters.

WORK IS BEING CONDUCTED AT 4 POINTS

Sampling, which started in February 2023, continues within monthly periods. In this context, research assistants took samples in April. The research ship is carrying out sampling studies at designated points in the Gulf of Izmit. Accordingly, the study is carried out at a total of 3 points, including 1 sampling points in the area where bottom mud will be drawn and 4 reference sampling point slightly outside the study area.

MARINE BIODIVERSITY WILL BE EMERGED

Within the scope of the study, studies on variable parameters in sea water, nutritional salts, chlorophyll-a, bacteriological analyses, phytoplankton analyses, zooplankton analyses, fish and benthic organisms are carried out. This study will reveal the existing marine biodiversity. The biodiversity monitoring study, which was initiated before the bottom mud extraction process, is planned to be continued in the future, covering the period during and after the bottom mud withdrawal. Thus, the possible positive effects of the Izmit Bay Bottom Sludge Cleaning works will be revealed.
