IETT General Directorate, which carries the debt burden of the buses purchased by the past administration, increased its flights despite the 40 percent decrease in the number of passengers during the pandemic process. Realizing the urban public transportation revolution, which has been talked about for years, in this time period, the institution also went out to tender for the purchase of new buses.

IETT General Directorate, one of the affiliates of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), continued Istanbul's public transportation services without interruption during the epidemic process that swept the whole world and economies. While city bus travel decreased by 40 percent and turnover by 30 percent, the number of trips was increased. The number of flights, which was 2019 million in 7,6, increased by 2020 thousand in 100 to 7,7 million. In line with the increase in the total number of trips, the distance traveled has also increased compared to the previous year. IETT buses, which covered a total of 2019 million kilometers in 219, covered 2020 million kilometers in 223. When public buses and redbud buses are added, 2020 lines and 820 million trips were organized in 16.5, a total of 800 million passengers were transported and 460 million kilometers were covered.

IETT quality came to all buses

The urban public transportation revolution, which has been worked on in IMM for years, has been implemented with the new administration. The historical transformation, which radically changed the public transportation system in Istanbul, started to be implemented as of December 2020. With the new system, a total of 3 thousand 41 Private Halk and Istanbul Transportation AŞ buses started to be operated by IETT with a service procurement and car rental system. Passenger satisfaction has also increased, as more flights to every point of Istanbul are started with 6 thousand vehicles and 14 thousand stops. In IETT's 2021 budget, 3 billion liras was allocated for public buses and redbud buses to finance the system.

Expenses double while income is stable

While IETT's revenue per passenger has remained almost constant in the last 5 years, its expenditure per passenger has increased continuously in parallel with the increase in inflation and exchange rates. The cost, which was 2016 liras per passenger in 3,2, increased to 2020 liras per passenger due to the decreasing passenger rate and capacity limitation in 6,6. As a result of the increase in this difference between income and expense over the years, while the income-expenses coverage ratio was approximately 2016 percent in 55, this ratio decreased to 2020 percent in 35. IMM has subsidized public transportation over 1 billion liras in the last 2 year due to the extra costs incurred.

The past administration left a debt of 1.5 billion liras

According to IETT data, there is a total debt of 110 euros (approximately 30 billion liras) from the previous administration, of which 140 million euros are overdue and 1.5 million are not due.

Of these debts, the overdue 45 million euro and the overdue 30 million euro debt belong to the bus purchases received in the past but not paid for. The new IETT management is both paying old debts and planning new investments and services.

100 buses are taken to Metrobus

IETT put a 2021 billion lira loan budget for the purchase of 300 new buses for the metrobus in the 1 budget and received approval from the IMM Assembly. However, the foreign loan file has been waiting for signature at the Presidency for 6 months. All direct verbal and written communication efforts aimed at reminding the Presidency were also left inconclusive. Since no results could be obtained, a tender will be made for the purchase of 100 buses with own resources in July. This purchase will be made due to the age, capacity and service problems of the buses used on the BRT line. The new vehicles will have a capacity of 200 passengers and a length of 21 meters.
