Is It Possible to Achieve Sustainable Growth in an Environment of Economic Crisis?

This week's guest of the 'Economy First' programme, moderated by Gülay Soydan Pehlevan, was Mavi Yeşil Danışmanlık General Coordinator Makbule Çetin. Çetin evaluated how to achieve sustainable growth in the economic crisis and the steps Turkey can take in this regard.

A DEVELOPMENT MODEL INTEGRATED WITH THE ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BE ADOPTED

Stating that the issue of sustainable development is a topic that concerns all citizens, Makbule Çetin, “We can define sustainable development as the set of activities carried out while meeting today's needs without stealing the needs of future generations. The concept of sustainable development includes integrated development that is environmentally sensitive as well as economic development. We are in a world where resources are running out very quickly. Therefore, sustainable development has an important place in terms of resource use.” said.

Türkiye IS PLANNING RAPID TRANSFORMATION IN CERTAIN SECTORS

On the question of where Türkiye and Bursa stand in terms of sustainable development Makbule Çetin, ” Sustainable development is a world issue and a global issue. Europe is leading this process with the European Green Deal. The European Green Deal, which started in 2019, is also on Turkey's agenda. An action plan was published in 2021 under the coordination of the Ministry of Commerce, and as a country, we quickly entered the consensus harmonization process. However, in this process, with the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, the climate crisis gave way to the energy crisis. Because of the war, Europe had to take back all its statements. We see that Turkey also carries out special studies against certain sectors during the transformation process. Türkiye foresees rapid transformation in areas such as iron and steel, aluminum, plastic, chemical fertilizer and cement.” said.

GREEN FINANCE IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR COUNTRY

The importance of financing the green transformation issue was emphasized. Commenting on the subject Makbule Çetin, “With the support of the World Bank, TUBITAK and KOSGEB will support companies with financing support. In total, 450 million dollars of green finance resources were provided for Türkiye. This resource needs to be used correctly. To achieve green transformation, we need to make technological investments. In order to make this investment, it is necessary to make a project. "In order to do this, Turkey needs to clearly demonstrate how "green" it is and what it aims for." said.
