Statement from YÖK about International Students

The Council of Higher Education published a statement regarding the public news about international students.

YÖK's statement is as follows:

It has been felt necessary to make the following statement due to some unfounded statements and posts that have recently accused international students and higher education institutions in Turkey: Turkey is the most preferred university in the world by international students with its many positive qualities such as quality of education, safe life and multicultural life tradition. It has become one of the 10 countries and has become a global education center in higher education. As a matter of fact, international students from many countries of the world increase their knowledge, skills and competencies in peace and tranquility at our universities.

International Student Candidates

International student candidates all over the world are subject to registration and acceptance procedures according to the laws of the countries to which they apply. In Turkey, these prospective students obtain student rights according to the principles/legislation that higher education institutions are subject to. In this context, the application and registration-acceptance processes of international students do not cause any loss of rights for our Turkish citizen students. Internationalization in higher education is one of the main strategic goals of the Council of Higher Education and our universities. As a matter of fact, this target is included in the Development Plans of the Republic of Turkey. The international students we host in our country gain importance in terms of global connections and international relations beyond the economic contribution they provide. Approximately ninety-five percent of international students in Turkey continue their education with their own means and return to their hometowns as volunteer ambassadors of our country. It should not be forgotten that it is a serious responsibility for all of us to avoid all kinds of unfounded words, actions and posts that will prevent our universities from becoming centers of attraction for international student and scientist mobility.
