WHY PICTURE?

Within the scope of the painting therapy event organized by the famous businesswoman Abide Gülel, who participated in the rescue efforts by directing her father's work machines from Mersin to Hatay as soon as she received the news of the earthquake; Psychiatrists, pedagogues, artists, celebrities such as Yonca Evcimik, İrem Derici, Atakan Işıktutan and Özgür Aras went to Hatay and painted with children in tent workshops.

Abide Gülel explains why they paint with children who survived the earthquake as follows:

“Children who survived the earthquake witnessed horrific traumatic events and the loss of loved ones, but were not given the opportunity to express their grief and pain. We especially applied art therapy to children between the ages of 5 and 13. We took such a step to ensure that the surviving children are not left with unforgettable memories and psychological trauma.

CHILDREN WHO CANNOT PUT THEIR TRAUMA IN WORDS

Scientists have used art therapy as a way to treat those suffering from traumatic experiences. Children who cannot put their trauma into words can almost always process their traumatic events through creative activities.

Scientific studies have found that drawing with children traumatized by natural disasters allows them to express their feelings and verbalize their experiences more effectively than speaking alone.

It has also been scientifically proven that it is beneficial for a child to visualize the traumatic experience before putting it into words.

We used art therapy to help traumatized children express their current emotional state, describe the traumatic event, process emotions, and integrate the trauma into their life stories.

IT CAN GREATLY FACILITATE THE RECOVERY PROCESS

Art therapy was an effective, psychologically beneficial, and culturally applicable intervention for earthquake-affected children. Children participating in the study easily shared previously unspoken trauma and pain through art tasks translated into simple, understandable language. Children's drawings revealed their traumatic earthquake experiences, the pain of losing loved ones, the importance of family and their dreams for the future. Thanks to art therapy, the children were able to regain emotional control and commemorate their losses, which were shattered by the earthquake.

“In my own experience, I have found that using art therapy with earthquake-affected children is a valuable form of treatment.”
