Acıbadem Maslak Hospital Pediatrics, Pediatric Rheumatology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Ferhat Demir made a statement saying that rheumatism in children should not be confused with 'growing pain'.

If you see disruption or deterioration in your child's gait, difference in the symmetrical appearance of his joints, swelling and redness, you should not ignore the possibility that rheumatism may be the cause of this problem.

Acıbadem Maslak Hospital Pediatrics, Pediatric Rheumatology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Ferhat Demir stated that joint rheumatism is defined as non-microbial inflammatory conditions that occur in the joint space and said, “The name of the disease in the medical literature; It is “juvenile idiopathic arthritis”. Unfortunately, we can see inflammatory joint rheumatism in children as well as in adult patients.” said.

Assoc. Dr. Ferhat Demir said that the first finding is usually joint pain.

Demir, “Other typical findings other than joint pain; joint swelling and limitation of movement of that joint. Especially in young children, limping and limitation of movement can be noticed without joint pain. In order to be able to talk about the presence of rheumatoid arthritis in a child, we need to show that this condition has been going on for at least 6 weeks and that there are no other causes such as infection, trauma and blood diseases that may cause this inflammation.” made the statement.

Ferhat Demir, who stated that this disease is seen in one out of every 500 children in our country, emphasized that early diagnosis is of critical importance.

Demir continued as follows for the treatment:

“With the early recognition of the disease, effective and appropriate treatment in its follow-up; edema-inflammation in the joint can be eliminated quickly and damage to the related joint can be prevented. In children whose disease is quickly and effectively controlled, the risks associated with the disease are reduced, and treatments can be stopped more easily in the future.”

Assoc. Dr. Ferhat Demir lists the symptoms of inflammatory joint rheumatism in children as follows:

  • Visible swelling of the joint
  • Redness and warmth on the joint surface
  • Short-term pain in the joint that does not regress and can last for days (especially in the morning and after rest)
  • Limited range of motion of the involved joint
  • Failure to walk or unwillingness to use the relevant joint while performing daily activities
