The third of the Webinar series of UTIKAD, the International Transport and Logistics Service Providers Association, took place on Wednesday, July 1, 2020. The past, present and future of digitalization in the webinar, which the industry has shown great interest, were discussed, the steps that companies should take towards digitalization, the strategies they should follow, and concrete applications related to digitalization in logistics.

Dr. Okan Tuna On the other hand, he expressed his evaluations of digitalization with a different perspective. “We are talking about the concept of digitalization, but at this point, it is necessary to talk about digital transformation. I basically think that we need to separate the two concepts. The first is digitalization and the second is digital transformation. First of all, the problems in the organization should be determined, and then the ideas of how this digital transformation can adapt to the organization and how to use digitalization effectively with this adaptation should be focused on. Let's not forget that digitalization is a technology business, but primarily a strategic management business. The question of how much, at what dose, and at what stage will digitization be, is also very important. ”
Dominique Willems, CLECAT Customs, Indirect Taxation and IT Senior Manager, He stated that he was working on applications for digitalization throughout his career, but today's situation is still not at the desired level. Willems said, “To be realistic, I have not seen much change in the last 15, 20 years. Considering the point reached since the 90s, the logistics sector should focus more on this issue. ”

Tunaşar said, “When we examine the digitalization processes of big companies, we see that digital transformation increases the value and profitability of firms' stocks in the long term. The digital transformation of the 7 leading companies in the world shows that this transformation did not happen immediately, but it has significant financial impact. As a result of the digitalization of logistics processes, companies' stocks over 500 million dollars from 40% to 25%, delivery costs from 20% to 10%, warranty expenses from 25% to 12%, labor costs from 30% to 20% "It seems that they dropped to".
TroyAvi Consulting Founding President Dr. Emre Serpen, drew attention to the need to speed up the digitization stages in order to accelerate the logistics processes. Dr. Serben; “In many countries and industries, digitization steps have been intensely taken and are continuing to progress rapidly. When we consider all these, the logistics sector also needs a lot of work to be done in this sense. The most important reason why the digitalization in the logistics sector is lagging behind other industries is that it consists of a multi-layered structure. The fact that logistics companies have very different cultures is seen as a factor. At the same time, companies need to support their staff working on IT. "The applications of digitalization will continue to increase day by day all over the world, and those who follow these changes will remain in the system, while those who do not obey will remain outside the system."

Speaking after Tuna Dominique, CLECAT Customs, Indirect Taxation and IT Senior Manager Willems,During his presentation, he discussed digitalization applications with a wide perspective. Willems, He explained CLECAT's approach to digitization with the following words:
“Data sovereignty is key, and digitalization should not be seen as a goal by itself, but as a tool for increased efficiency. Electronic data exchange should be the focus on the digitalization of documents. A distributed network structure is always better than single-center solutions. At the same time, the EU should avoid choosing a single solution and technology by applying technological neutrality. ”
Stating that it is an almost completely digitalized and automated system when looking at customs and trade in Europe today, Willems said, “Currently, legislation provides us with a lot of simplification. When we look at the EU countries, they are among the first 25 countries in the Logistics Performance Index. However, this situation brings with it difficulties such as increasing security and security threats, increasing trade barriers, food, health and environmental problems, and new ways are required for international trade to continue growing. ”
During the webinar, the need for the support of public institutions was emphasized once again, in order to carry out digitalization efforts, by stating the necessity of a platform that will integrate all logistics companies.
