Quicklime is the unprocessed form of natural limestone containing calcium oxide (CaO). It is generally obtained by heating limestone to high temperatures in quarries. Limestone loses carbon dioxide (CO2) in this process and turns into calcium oxide.
Where is Quicklime Used?
- Construction and Restoration: Quicklime is used in the production of mortars and plasters. When mixed with water, it forms calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and hardens to form lime mortar. It is preferred in restoring old buildings and plastering stone walls.
- Soil Improvement: It is used in agriculture to regulate the pH balance of acidic soils. It increases the absorption of plant nutrients.
- Water Purification: In water treatment systems, it regulates the pH balance of water and ensures the precipitation of metals in it.
- Farming: It prevents microbial growth and provides hygiene by using it in animal bedding.
- Chemical Industry: It is used as a pH regulator in the production of industrial chemicals and various chemical processes.
