Students Bring Waste Tangerines into the Economy

IZMIR (IGFA) – Menderes Özdere Tahir Çamur Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School students recycle tangerines that fall from trees and bring them back into the economy.

Young people make vinegar, jam, essence and dried tangerine from waste tangerines in the school's kitchen workshop, and use these products in practical kitchen classes.

TANGERINE FLAVOR HAS BECOME A FAVORITE IN THE KITCHEN

The high-quality, thin-skinned, seedless and naturally flavored satsuma tangerine grown in the region has become a favorite among vocational high school students in the kitchen. Hasan Fehmi Akın, who owns a tangerine garden in Gümüldür, collaborated with Menderes Özdere Tahir Çamur Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School for the tangerines that remained on the trees without being picked and fell to the ground. Stating that tangerines that ripen in the normal process fall to the ground if they are not collected on time, and this increases the acidity of the soil and damages the soil, Akın took action to recycle waste tangerines in order to prevent both soil damage and economic loss. Vocational high school students who collected the tangerines left on the ground chose to reintroduce the waste tangerines into the economy by turning them into vinegar, jam, essence and dried tangerines. Young people, who also use the products they produce in applied kitchen classes, create unique flavors with the aroma of tangerine.

GEOGRAPHICALLY SIGNED TANGERINE

'Gümüldür Mandarin', which has been given a geographical indication certificate by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, is seen as the crown jewel among the tangerine varieties in the world. The production record is being broken in the region, where 8 kilos per tree can be obtained from the tangerines produced in an area of 310 thousand 90 decares in Gümüldür.

OUR YOUTH BRING THEORY AND PRACTICE TOGETHER

Sharing his thoughts on the subject, Izmir Provincial Director of National Education Dr. Ömer Yahşi said, 'Our main goal in vocational high schools is to produce projects that meet the needs of the region. Tangerine production is a very common sector in Gümüldür. Our vocational high school students recycle waste tangerines from the garden and bring them back into the economy. At the same time, our young people, who bring theory and practice together in the workshop, learn by doing and experiencing.' He congratulated the students for their work.
