China Increases Grain Production to Ensure Food Security

China will implement a new action plan to increase grain production in order to ensure food security. According to the action plan published by the State Council, the country's grain production capacity will be increased by more than 2030 million tons by 50. In 2030, the grain growing area will be approximately 1,75 billion mu, or 117 million hectares, and grain production per mu will reach 420 kilograms.
While more than 650 million tons of grain have been harvested in China for nine years, the amount of grain per capita reached 493 kilograms. The National Development and Reform Commission considers that grain supply and demand are still in a 'delicate balance' and the gap may widen, so it is important to ensure food security.

According to the new plan to be implemented, special importance will be given to corn and soybeans in grain production. The emphasis is on improving the quality and optimizing the structure of rice and wheat. Potatoes and other types of grains and legumes will also be encouraged according to their growing regions. Under the guidance of the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, important projects will be implemented, from protecting 720 critical grain producing water to building high-standard agricultural land and revitalizing the seed industry.
