IMM Brings Intelligent System Infrastructure to Snow Fighting Vehicles

İBB implemented the project that brought a smart system to snow fighting vehicles. The vehicles equipped with advanced technology cameras and in-vehicle systems will be able to measure the salt and solution used, and safe driving will be provided with 360-degree sensors. Real-time images will be instantly projected to the command center in AKOM. It will be possible to supervise the work of the staff in their areas of responsibility. Stays on the road will be prevented.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has implemented the project that brings a smart system infrastructure to the snow-fighting vehicles in its fleet. With the project carried out by İBB Subsidiary İSBAK, technological transformation was achieved in snow-fighting and freight transport vehicles within the body of the İBB Road Maintenance and Infrastructure Coordination Department. As the meteorological data pointed to a cold and snowy period, IMM teams tested the vehicles with new systems and the final preparations with the winter exercise. Along with Ayhan Taş, Head of IMM Road Maintenance and Infrastructure Coordination Department, snow fighting teams from IBB subsidiary ISBAK and ISFALT participated in the exercise.

TECHNOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATION IN SNOW FIGHTING

ISBAK Deputy General Manager Cagdas Mersinlioglu, who participated in the exercise with ISBAK teams, noted that they carried out technological transformations in vehicles within IBB. The innovations that Mersinlioğlu shared are as follows:

• Detailed data analysis with the telemetry (monitoring and control infrastructure) system,

• Vehicle and driver scoring system,

• Fuel efficiency,

• Idle and violation detection,

• Instant fleet management,

• Real-time and historical image viewing,

• Pedestrian and vehicle collision detections with GSS,

Contributions of technological transformation compared to past tools:

• Digitizing the current business model,

• Traceability,

• Historical data recording,

• Fuel and time savings,

• Fault detection,

• Reducing costs,

• Detailed reporting,

Contributions of the safe driving system:

The driver is warned with an audible warning in cases such as lane violation, pedestrian collision, vehicle collision.

• Vehicle Movement Alert

• Following distance

• Lane Departure Warning.

• Pedestrian Detection Warning

PREPARATIONS OK

Approximately 1.600 personnel and 354 snow plows, who were present at various points in Istanbul, made expeditions on duty routes for the winter exercise carried out by IMM. The teams tested the vehicles equipped with technological equipment from safe driving to signaling. The teams, coordinated with the directives of Ayhan Taş, Head of the IMM Road Maintenance and Infrastructure Coordination Department, took part in the exercise at various critical points throughout the province.

Providing information about the snow preparation in the exercise, Head of Department Ayhan Taş said that IMM has taken the highest level of measures in the fight against snow. Stating that they have made the average vehicle age younger by adding new construction equipment to the fleet, Taş said, “We have approximately 400 thousand tons of salt stock in our warehouses. For more, our procurement efforts continue. We think that we will have a problem-free time with the sensitivity of Istanbulites and their compliance with the rules.”

TEAMS READY

IMM has taken measures against adverse weather conditions that may occur in the coming months. Winter conditions will be fought in Istanbul with 9 thousand 649 personnel and 2 thousand 275 vehicles. Snow shoveling and salting teams will be kept ready at 4 intervention points on the 23 thousand 598 kilometer responsible road network in Istanbul and will carry out intervention works when necessary. 64 tanks of solution will be used on the roads, and 377 boxes of salt will be left at critical points. With the snowfall, the teams will carry out snow shoveling and salting works on roads, squares, subway entrances and exits, bus stops, under and overpasses, in front of piers, hospitals and schools, and will intervene in dangerous parts / icicles, fallen trees.

BEUS IN 60 POINTS

The teams will carry out their work in line with the messages from the Icing Early Warning System (BEUS) established at 60 points throughout Istanbul. Tracking and guiding the teams will be provided through the vehicle tracking system. Towing and rescue vehicles will be kept ready on the main arterial and ring roads, and possible traffic accidents and stays on the road will be intervened quickly. Village roads will be kept open with 168 shoveling tractors given to the control of the headmen.

MOBILE BUFFET AND TOILET

IMM started the winter service work for homeless citizens living on the streets on November 22, 2022. Currently, 595 homeless citizens, 102 men and 697 women, are hosted (men in Esenyurt, women in Kayışdağı IMM Facilities, and families and men in 3 contracted hotels in Fatih and Bağcılar).

Teams of the Veterinary Services Directorate are working on the feeding and treatment of stray animals. In heavy snowfalls, hot drinks, soup and water will be served to the drivers waiting in traffic at the emergency services of hospitals, piers and roads with mobile kiosks; Citizens will be served with mobile toilets that will be deployed at critical points. Additional flights will be organized by IETT, Metro Istanbul and City Lines on dates with heavy snowfall.
