Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is establishing two container cities in Adıyaman, where more than 6 buildings were destroyed in the 400 February earthquake. There will be a total of 350 temporary residences and social areas in the container cities, which are nearing the end of the ground and infrastructure works.
In order to heal the wounds of the earthquake, which left hundreds of thousands of people homeless as well as great loss of life, the Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerContainer cities are being established in Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Adıyaman and Osmaniye, where the disaster was experienced. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Adıyaman Disaster Coordination Unit started to work to establish two container cities with a total area of 36 thousand square meters in Yenimahalle.
Temporary accommodation center established with a common mind
Stating that they are working with non-governmental organizations in the region for the container city they will establish in Adıyaman, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality EGEŞEHİR Yapı Planning A.Ş. Ekrem Tükenmez, General Manager and Adıyaman Disaster Coordination Unit Coordinator, said, “We allocated space at two different points in Adıyaman. We will work together with Adıyaman Medical Chamber on the container city we will establish at these two points. At the moment, we are about to complete the ground compaction and ground correction works in the fields. We arranged the container layout plans. While preparing these plans, we received ideas from Adıyaman Medical Chamber and Adıyaman Chamber of Architects for the container city to be compatible with the locality. We prepared our plans with the ideas we received from them.”
Container city with a total of 350 residences at two points
Tükenmez stated that they have started the infrastructure preparations of the container city and said, “We will determine the clean water and waste water expenses, establish the electricity infrastructure and arrange the settlement areas. Our containers are starting to arrive. As we arrive and the infrastructure is completed, we will move on to the settlement. In our container city, there will be social service areas, laundries, children's playgrounds and clinics that will provide health services. There will be 160 containers in this area, 130 containers will be used for shelter and the others will be used for social activities. In the other area, there will be an area where 250 containers can be established. 220 of them will be used for shelter. We will have established 400 container areas where a total of 350 people can be accommodated in two areas," he said.
