Izmir Metropolitan Municipality increased its controls in coal sales warehouses to protect air quality and human health with the approach of winter months. The teams conducted a total of 364 inspections at 800 coal sales points in the city in one year.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Environmental Protection and Control Branch Directorate teams increased the inspections at coal sales points with the approach of winter. The teams inspected 364 coal sales points 800 times a year in order to prevent illegal and poor quality coal sales and to protect the air quality and human health in the city. Within the scope of the Environment Law, administrative fines of 9 thousand TL were imposed on 215 companies that sell without a permit or whose coal was found to be against the standards as a result of the analysis of samples taken at least twice a year. The sale of non-standard coals was stopped. In the last year, the number of inspections in apartments with central system using coal has reached 900.
Punishment for those who do not follow the rules
Arzu Küçükefe, Superintendent of Inspection at the Environmental Protection and Control Branch Directorate, stated that the coal samples were sent to laboratories found suitable for environmental analysis by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. Stating that the consumer should also question whether the purchased coal has a sales permit in İzmir, Arzu Küçükefe said, “If there is a sales permit issued by the Governor's Office, they can easily buy this coal. Fuel quality and combustion systems are checked regularly by our teams and our people are informed about these issues.”
Arzu Küçükefe stated that audits are also carried out against the sale of poor quality coals by mixing them with quality coal, and that necessary legal actions are taken if this situation is detected.
