The 1th layer of the inner protection shell (IKK), one of the main elements of the security system of nuclear power plants, was installed in the reactor building of the 6st power unit of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS). The next step will be to close the reactor dome. With the assembly of the dome, which is planned to be completed by the end of 2022, the reactor section of the 1st unit will be completed.

Consisting of steel coating and special concrete that seals the reactor building, IKK not only protects the reactor building, but also supports the pipe passages and the pole crane that performs maintenance in the nuclear reactor during the operation phase of the power plant.

The 6th layer of IKK is a steel structure consisting of 30 blocks. The assembly of the 224 meter diameter layer with a total weight of 44 tons was carried out at the Akkuyu NPP construction site using a Liebherr LR 13000 heavy crawler crane.

The layer took 8 hours to install. After the installation, the reactor building of the 1st power unit rose another 8,4 meters and reached 51,5 meters.

Akkuyu Nuclear Inc. Anastasia Zoteeva, Managing Director, said: “An important milestone has taken place today. After the 6th layer was installed, all that remained was to close the dome of the reactor building. The installation process was performed flawlessly. Our builders, installers, fitters and crane operators have proven once again that their professional skills are at the highest level. Building a structure weighing tons with 1 centimeter precision is an extremely difficult task. We did a good job, which once again showed that the Akkuyu NPP team is extremely professional.”

By the end of 2022, it is planned to start pre-commissioning works such as the installation of the inner protection shell for the 1st power unit, the start of cleaning the reactor vessel with water and the commissioning of the pole crane.

Construction and installation work at the Akkuyu NPP site continues at all main and ancillary facilities, including four power units, coastal hydraulic engineering structures, a power distribution system, administrative buildings, a training center and physical protection facilities of the future NPP.
