Izmir Metropolitan Municipality created private parking areas due to the increase in the use of vehicles defined as electric scooters and due to this situation, faulty parks caused occupation in public spaces. With the works, most of which have been completed, an e-scooter parking area with a capacity of approximately 63 will be created at 2 points in the coastline and inner parts of the city.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has created parking areas for electric scooters (e-scooters), which are rapidly becoming widespread all over the world as a sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation vehicle.
Within the scope of the works, the construction of a total of 20 e-scooter parking lots at 47 points, integrated with BISIM, the tram station, and the ferry port, on the 668-kilometer coastline between Üçkuyular Pier and Mavişehir, was completed. In the inner parts of İzmir, a total of 16 e-scooter parking spaces are under construction at 151 points. The construction of a total of 16 e-scooter parking lots has been completed at five of these 44 points. Production continues at 11 points. When the work coordinated by the Department of Transportation is completed, İzmir will have an e-scooter parking area with a capacity of 63 at a total of 2 points.
Meeting with scooter companies on complaints
A meeting was held with the officials of 9 e-scooter operators operating in Izmir in line with the complaints received by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality regarding incorrect parking types. At the meeting, issues related to current geographical parking restrictions prepared by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, prevention of pavement occupations, new parking lot solutions, safety in scooter use, and sustainable data collection system were discussed.
Safer, more organized
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Sustainable Transportation Planning Branch Manager Özlem Taşkın Erten gave information about the application and said, “E-scooters seem to be indispensable micro-mobility tools of today and the future. Currently, approximately 9 thousand scooter vehicles from 16 companies are allowed in İzmir. We wanted to reserve a place for scooters along our 22 km coastline. Just as we provide a parking area for bikes to be safer and more organized, now we have made room for the use of e-scooters.”
“Pedestrians and bicycles need to be parked unobstructed”
Erten said, “We have allocated special areas along the coastline in order to ensure that pedestrians can park without obstructing their passage or to prevent accidents on the bicycle path. All companies will be able to use these areas. A scooter user will know that they can pick up and drop off from the scooter parking lot. We can think of it as an incentive project. We hope that companies will encourage their users to use scooters here in terms of life safety for people who use this shore on foot. We especially request that the points where scooter users leave their scooters along the coast should be these areas," he said.
