VM Medical Park Ankara Hospital Oral and Dental Health Specialist Dt. Fırat Adin gave information about the causes of dental caries.

Pointing out that people who consume more carbohydrate and sugary foods in their diets, as well as people with very low fluoride content in the water they use, are at higher risk of caries. Fırat Adin said the following about dental caries:

“Tooth decay is usually caused by carbohydrate foods (sugar, starch, etc.), cola and similar sugary carbonated drinks, cake, chocolate, etc. It occurs especially when sticky foods stay on the tooth surface for a long time. Bacteria in the mouth are fed with these food residues and acid is produced with the help of these microorganisms. After a while, this acidic environment causes destruction in the hard tissues of the tooth and creates dental caries.

Brushing your teeth after breakfast and before going to bed in the evening and using dental floss regularly every day is the most effective way. Appropriate toothbrush should be selected, as food residues are mostly accumulated in the recesses of the chewing surfaces of the teeth and the interfaces where the teeth touch each other. Regular dental check-ups are the best way to catch caries in the early period.

Stating that periodontal diseases are inflammatory diseases that affect the gums and other tissues that support the teeth, Dt. Fırat Adin shared the following information:

“Periodontal diseases are responsible for 70 percent of tooth loss in adults. These diseases can be treated easily and successfully when diagnosed at an early stage. Periodontal diseases begin with gingivitis. During this period, the gums are bleeding, red and enlarged in volume. It may not cause much discomfort in the early period. If left untreated, the disease may progress to periodontitis and cause irreversible damage to the gingiva and the jawbone that supports the teeth. Damage occurs in the jawbone along with other tissues that support the teeth. As the disease progresses, the teeth begin to shake and may even go into extraction.

One of the gum diseases seen in a large part of the population is gum recession. Gum recession is the opening of the tooth root surface by changing the position of the gum tissue covering the bone surrounding the tooth for various reasons. Gingival recession is a very common problem that can cause aesthetic and sensitivity complaints. It is usually caused by untreated dental diseases and not cleaning the formed tartar. If gingival recession is not treated, it can progress and eventually lead to tooth loss. Protective, maintenance and/or surgical methods are used in the treatment of gingival recession.

Emphasizing that tooth sensitivity (dentin sensitivity) is also a common dental problem, Dt. Fırat Adin said:

“Tooth sensitivity is a condition that can develop over time as a result of common problems such as gum recession and enamel erosion. Tooth sensitivity is most common between the ages of 20 and 50. Regular consumption of acidic foods or drinks can erode the enamel of the teeth and cause sensitivity in the teeth. In order not to complain about this situation, it is necessary to consume acidic foods in limited numbers. Teeth and gum structures differ between individuals. That's why manufacturers produce toothbrushes that are different from each other. If you have sensitive teeth and use a hard toothbrush, you are more likely to damage your teeth. Consult your dentist's advice on this matter. In addition to using the wrong toothbrush, brushing too hard also damages the teeth. Some people think that by brushing their teeth harder, they clean better or their teeth will be whiter. However, this does nothing but damage the teeth and gums. Tooth sensitivity is very common in people who are clenching or grinding their teeth.”
