With the program, 37 young people started to take part in the rail system projects of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. New graduates are also offered the opportunity to work in the field in park construction works and art application projects.

Thanks to the application, only 37 young people take part in rail system projects. In park construction works, young people are included in many fields from landscape architecture to civil engineering. There is also great interest in the Young Assistant project, which aims to employ at least two new graduates in the art application projects of the Metropolitan Municipality.

“We started a first in Turkey”

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Rail Systems Department Head Mehmet Oğuz Ergenekon stated that they started the new graduate project with the tender for the construction of Çiğli Tram on July 13, 2020 and said, “In this type of work, more than 10 years experienced personnel are sought, but a space must be opened for new graduates to gain experience. We maintain this requirement in all projects, from the walking metro to the tram, under our department. Currently, 37 new graduates are working. After us, the requirement to employ new graduates spread to Turkey. Our President Tunç Soyerstarted a first in Turkey. On March 26, 2021, the staff employment of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and public institutions affiliated to the ministry was stipulated as 20 percent new graduates or young people who have passed 3 years at the most. The leadership of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is important in this regard. Hundreds of thousands of new graduates will benefit from this condition in Turkey," he said.

“I see myself in the best place to work in Izmir”

New graduates, on the other hand, are extremely satisfied with the application. Sıla Şahin, who worked as an architect in the Narlıdere-Fahrettin Altay metro project, said, “We are experiencing the pain of the experience requirement. It's almost impossible to find a job. I see myself in the best place to work in İzmir. I think this project should be implemented by other municipalities as well. There are so many new graduates that I still have friends who can't find a job. I thank our president,” he said.

“A very important opportunity for new graduates”

Orhun Akan, an electrical and electronics engineer who took part in the same project, stated that he had done an internship in the metro project before and said, “I think this is a very important opportunity for new graduates like us. Everyone puts a threshold of experience in front of us. We cannot overcome this without gaining experience somewhere. For this, I am very grateful to our president. Starting my business life with such a project is a big step for me. These are the projects that are talked about in the sector and that are very important for İzmir. This chance is not for everyone. I am so happy. I hope to take part in large-scale projects in the future," he said.

“Family atmosphere”

Samet Küçükbekir, a civil engineer working on the Çiğli Tram Project, said, “Our President Tunç SoyerWe thank you. They are looking for experience in the market, but it is necessary to gain this experience from somewhere. This project led to that. There is a very nice family atmosphere here and it is a nice experience for us. I think we will achieve great success both for our country and for ourselves in the next period.”

The demand for the Young Assistant program is high

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality also launched the Young Assistant program this year, targeting at least two university student assistants to work in art application projects. With the project, a young assistants section was created in the service procurement specifications of projects with the content of festivals, biennials, festivals and art production. With the program, 16 assistant students took part in a total of 60 activities. This number will be increased to 21 in the coming days with the Kulturpark Land Art Design project.
