Altınbaş University Microbiologist Dr. Instructor Member İpek Ada Alver talked about the problems that infection can cause during pregnancy and the points to be considered.

Noting that urinary tract infections are the most common type of infection encountered in pregnant women, Dr. Instructor Member İpek Ada Alver said, “Due to the enlargement of the uterus and the pressure on the urinary bladder, the urine cannot be fully emptied and the accumulated urine causes infection. The factors that trigger urinary tract infection are lack of hygiene and entry of bacteria in the stool into the urinary tract, changes in the flora in the vagina, frequent sexual intercourse, hormonal changes, suppression of the immune system, and less water consumption. Untreated urinary tract infections can cause kidney failure, low birth weight and premature birth. The most prominent features of urinary tract infection are burning during urination, urinary incontinence, vaginal discharge and itching, pain during sexual intercourse, pain in the groin, nausea, high fever. Especially 6-24. poses a risk for urinary tract infection between weeks.

Consuming undercooked meat causes health problems in every individual, but it causes bigger problems in pregnant women. Parasites and bacteria that pass through undercooked meat through the placenta can cause systemic diseases and even death in the baby. In particular, consumption of raw meats such as salami, sausages, and poor cooking of meats such as canned tuna, chicken, liver, red meat and fish cause many parasites and bacteria to be transmitted from the mother to the baby. Since these disease-causing microorganisms can settle in the liver, heart and brain of the baby and cause systemic diseases, miscarriage and death, meat should be consumed well cooked. At the same time, direct contact with unvaccinated animals and their feces can also cause parasitic infections.

He emphasized the importance of strengthening the immune system in preventing all types of infections due to the limited use of drugs in pregnant women. Mentioning that there are miracle foods on this subject, Ada Alver said, “It is a critical issue to increase the flora of beneficial microorganisms in the intestinal system, especially in pregnant women. For this, we recommend consuming kefir, prebiotic, probiotic and fermented foods. In this way, the immune system will be strengthened and both the mother and the baby will be protected from infections. However, some herbal teas that strengthen the immune system should not be consumed unconsciously, as they cause the uterine muscles to relax during pregnancy. He gave advice to pregnant women.
