Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day is the official holiday of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, celebrated on 19 May every year. Youth and Sports Day was first celebrated in Samsun in 1926 under the name of Gazi Day, and became official on May 24, 1935 under the name Atatürk Day. Celebrated at Fenerbahçe Stadium with Beşiktaş's initiatives, this first 19 May has become a sports day with the participation of hundreds of athletes from Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe. Beşiktaş Founding Member Ahmet Fetgeri Aşeni, who took the floor at the Sports Congress that took place a while after this organization, proposed that the celebrated Atatürk Day be held every year under the name of “19 May Youth and Sports Day” so that the celebrated Atatürk Day can be attributed to all youth. This proposal, which was voted on in the congress, was accepted and enacted with the approval of Atatürk.
