Abandoned Rows of Shops in Istanbul Turned into 'Design Museums'

Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Ekrem İmamoğlu, spoke at the ceremony held to mark the transformation of the Architect Sinan-built Row of Shops in Suleymaniye, which had been abandoned to its fate for years, into the 'IMM Istanbul Design Museum' after a long-term restoration.

After the ceremony, Mayor İmamoğlu answered journalists' questions about the agenda.

İmamoğlu responded to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's allegations about him "being sidetracked" and "making excuses, not projects" and said, "In 2019, his Presidential salary was 74 thousand 500 liras, which was 13 thousand 500 dollars with the exchange rates of that day. And today, if I am not mistaken, that salary has increased to around 183 thousand liras. But unfortunately its value has dropped to 6 thousand dollars. So, in my opinion, when they look at these accounts, they can read the budget accounts of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the process better with the help of mathematics related to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and see it even better. I can't help but think about this: In other words, 'How will a person who has not even benefited himself in his 5 years of power be of any use to our people...?' They should stop commenting on budgets through Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. My traveling companions with whom I work, who are qualified and manage their business, economy and budget well, are the children of that nation, they manage the rules of the economy and the actions to be carried out better. They manage despite all the difficulties. They manage the inflation in Turkey. But now we see that; The mind, mentality and Mr. President that governs Turkey should not deal with Istanbul's business, but should care about the pensioners' difficulty in making ends meet and the salary they receive. How many million households are below the hunger line in Turkey? Let him look at it. And let me say it again: Let him find a solution to the increase in foreign exchange rates and cost increases in Turkey. It is his duty and responsibility. "I invite Mr. President to do his duty," he replied.

“THE SECOND PHASE IS READY AFTER 5 MONTHS”

Sharing the information that the second phase of the area will be completed in approximately 5 months, İmamoğlu said, “As you see those surprise corners here, you will be more proud of this city you live in and you will feel more responsible for this city. Of course, the introduction of new areas and new culture and arts venues to this city at such points excites us. Thus, the fact that this region has become the focus of intense attention already makes us impatient. Just as we were able to do a work that revived the Haliç Shipyard, which was entrusted to Fatih Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, from a closed state, producing but also bringing together design and art, we continue to do the same thing here. Just as we brought Büyükdere Nursery, which was entrusted by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, to Istanbul, we are doing the same. We save the legacy of Suleiman the Magnificent and Sinan the Architect from extinction, and turn it into a center where reproduction takes place, where our people meet and see their lively participation in life. And best of all, we're opening it to the public. "Only we can do these," he said.
