By producing electricity from garbage, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), which both protects nature and reduces foreign dependency in energy, will generate electricity for 2022 million Istanbulites from garbage in 2.

Targeting 'zero' carbon in 2050 within the framework of the Climate Action Plan, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) continues its 'Green Environment' policies rapidly. IMM, which processes the garbage it collects in more than one facility and transforms it into electricity, thus both cleans the environment and reduces foreign dependency with renewable energy. IMM, which produces as much energy as the electricity consumed by 2021 million 1 thousand Istanbulites in 200, will meet the electricity needs of 2022 million Istanbulites in 2.

IMM, which sells the energy produced by the electricity poles installed next to the energy production facilities, to the city grid, will thus create new investment resources for its budget.

İBB produces the said electricity at the facilities of İSTAÇ, which is a subsidiary of the municipality. In 2021, approximately 850 million KWh of electricity, equivalent to the energy needs of 600 thousand people, was produced at the 'Landfill Gas Power Generation Facilities' in Seymen, Odayeri and Kömürcüoda locations. 340 million KWh of electricity, equivalent to the energy needs of approximately 235 thousand people, was produced at the Domestic Waste Incineration Facility. 13 million KWh of electricity, equivalent to the energy needs of 9 thousand people, was produced in the Biomethanization Facilities.

FACILITIES WILL OPERATE AT FULL CAPACITY

A total of 2021 million KWh of electricity was produced in the Waste Incineration and Energy Production Facility and the Biomethanization facilities, which were opened in the last quarter of 244. With the full capacity operation of these facilities in 2022, it is expected to produce 620 million KWh. Total electricity production is expected to be 2022 Billion KWh in 1.3 together with other facilities. In this way, electricity, which corresponds to the energy consumed by approximately 2 million Istanbulites, will be produced from garbage.

HOW IS ELECTRICITY PRODUCED FROM WASTE GAS?

Electricity is produced at the IMM's regular landfills, Seymen and Odayeri on the European side, and Kömürcüoda on the Anatolian side. Before the waste is disposed of in landfill, the site is excavated and perforated pipes are inserted. Thanks to these pipes, the methane gas that will be formed by the decay of the wastes is transferred to the power generation facilities. Methane gas is used as fuel in gas engines and turns the engine. The motion energy of the rotating motor is converted into electrical energy and the grid is fed. A total of 2021 million KWh of electricity produced in Odayeri, Seymen and Kömürcüoda in 600 is equivalent to the 850-year electricity need of approximately 1 thousand people.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION OF WASTE GAS IS PREVENTED

Landfill gas generated as a result of the regular storage of waste in Energy Generation Facilities from Landfill Gas is controlled and its release into the atmosphere is prevented. All of the energy production facilities of IMM are included in the scope of renewable energy, as they use waste as a source. Thus, it both reduces the need for fossil fuels for the production of electricity and prevents waste from harming nature.
