Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Brigade Department provides comprehensive training to firefighters working in the private sector at its training facilities in Toros. In 2022, 12 people learned about emergency interventions such as fire, search and rescue, rescue in traffic accidents, identification of chemical substances, and response to chemical fires.

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Brigade Department Education Branch Directorate provides various trainings for citizens at the Fire and Natural Disaster Training Center in Toros. In the center, firefighters working in the private sector are taught fast and effective intervention techniques in situations such as fire and natural disasters. Natural Disaster Training Simulations prepare trainees for disasters with realistic response techniques. Last year, 12 people were trained.

Versatile education

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department Head İsmail Derse said that the training provided at the Fire and Natural Disaster Training Center aims to raise awareness of basic disasters. İsmail Derse said, “Emergency teams and fire extinguishers in workplaces and factories are trained here. The first priority is to ensure that they learn the basic information that will enable them to survive in such events. They learn to work with fresh air respirators and smoke masks, as well as the forms of intervention in smoky and toxic environments. We also teach them the standard course of action to take in a crisis.”

“Exemplary facility for Turkey”

Expressing that the participants gained experience in a realistic simulation center, Derse said, “They learn an intervention method here by feeling the heat of the flame, feeling the smoke and toxic gases. They also experience how to overcome their excitement during the intervention. They are trained in an area where they can survive, save their colleagues, apply evacuation methods. They learn how to act in smoky environments, how to respond to fires such as vehicle fires and kitchen fires. This is an exemplary facility in Turkey,” he said.

“I felt like I was in the fire”

Mehmet Kirkit, who works in a private company and participated in the trainings given in Toros, stated that he felt the feeling of being caught in the fire and said, “We used to do this kind of training at the factory, but this is the first time I have experienced it. It was a first for us too. I learned a lot from this training. I learned how to fight a fire. It has been very useful,” he said.

“While I was training, I saw how difficult this task was”

Expressing that he gained significant experience, Serdar Zeytinciler said: “Some interventions seem simple from the outside, but they are not. The temperature is too high inside. While I was training here, I saw how difficult this task was. It is a job that requires dedication. Most of the time you have to save people.”

“We learned how to intervene”

Gürcan Güler said, “We also receive training at our workplace, but we do not have such a multi-purpose building. Here we get more professional training. It's a nice experience. Receiving such an education is also important for our civil life outside of work. We have learned that we can take precautions against such dangers, whether at home or at work, and how we can intervene.”

“We are exposed to heat, gas and flame here”

Enver Eroğlu, who stated that there is a fire crew of 50 people in the place where they work, emphasized that they receive continuous training from the Izmir Fire Department. Enver Eroğlu said, “When it comes to professional fire training, Toros Training Center is very important to us. Because here we can test our own equipment and experience. We could not find such a facility in many places. This is very important for our team because we do our work with ease. Here we are exposed to heat, gas, flame. In a sense, our friends can see the truth,” he said.
