Van Police Department's Only Female Cavalry is on Duty

Elanur Tuncer (2023), the only female cavalryman of the Mounted Police Group Chief, which was established within the Van Police Department in 34, stated that when our people see a female police officer on horseback, they become the center of attention.

Established last year, the Mounted Police Group Headquarters, affiliated with the Provincial Police Department's Riot Branch, consists of a unit with 4 horses. There are 8 riders and a total of 20 police officers in the unit.

Mounted police are on duty at the Lake Van coastline, parks and gardens where citizens are concentrated, and at meetings, demonstrations and marches. Children especially show interest in the mounted police and take souvenir photos. In addition, mounted police continue to patrol the beach in Edremit district.

Elanur Tuncer, who started her career as the "only female cavalryman" with the establishment of the Mounted Police Group Chief in Van, worked at the Mounted Police Group Chief in Ankara for 8 years.

Emphasizing that it makes her happy to be one of the very few female cavalrymen in Turkey, Tuncer said, “Unfortunately, the number of female mounted police officers in Turkey is very low. But as a woman, I am very happy to do this profession and work in this unit; I'm very proud. When our people see the horse, we already become the center of attention. But it attracts more attention when they see a female police officer on it. As a woman, I believe that our women can be successful in any field whenever they want. “I think they should never give up and chase their dreams,” she said.
