Engin Er: “Priority should be given to settlements on the fault”

The earthquake issue, which has been on the agenda for a long time in Turkey, is gradually being replaced by urban transformation leaves it to discussion. In some provinces of Turkey, which is preparing for local elections, mayoral candidates are conducting the election process for earthquake preparations and urban transformation projects. So, what is the situation of Bursa, one of the cities in the earthquake zone, in terms of earthquake risk and urban transformation? Are the urban transformation projects planned and correct? What should be taken into consideration in urban transformation?

TMMOB Chamber of Geological Engineers Southern Marmara Branch President Engin ErIn his evaluation to Everyone Duysun, he pointed out that urban transformation projects were not planned correctly and emphasized that geotechnical features such as fault lines, liquefaction areas and landslide areas should be examined in detail.

Pointing out that urban transformation works carried out without taking these factors into consideration may create new risks, Er stated that cities such as Istanbul and Balıkesir have completed their microzoning works, but these works have not yet been completed in Bursa.

“URBAN TRANSFORMATION WORKS CARRIED OUT IN BURSA ARE NOT CORRECT”

Pointing out that there have been studies on urban transformation in Bursa, but these studies are not correct in terms of R&D and projects, TMMOB Chamber of Geological Engineers Southern Marmara Branch President Engin Er said, “In order to carry out urban transformation, we must first clearly identify the fault lines, liquefaction areas and landslide areas.” You need to know how to apply it to 1 zoning plans. If you attempt an urban transformation without knowing these, you will place new buildings and new construction on the fault line. Thus, the first button is fastened incorrectly. To prevent these from happening, microzoning studies should not be carried out. fault linesmust be marked. "Istanbul has completed its microzoning studies on this issue, Balıkesir has completed it, but this work is not completed in Bursa." he said.

“THERE ARE SETTLEMENTS ON FAULTS IN BURSA”

İstanbulNoting that there are no fault lines passing through active settlements in , Mayor Er said, “Bursa It's not like Istanbul. In Bursa, especially the middle branch and the southern branch pass under settlements. Iznik fault, starting from Iznik Gemlik fault, Gençeli fault and fault lines continuing next to Mudanya. These are fault lines passing through residential areas. These should be marked once as a 1/1000 implementation plan. If we do not mark these, you will put public and private institutions and personal buildings built here on the fault lines. Unfortunately, most municipalities do not recognize the fault lines recognized by the Ministry. Since they do not recognize these areas and declare them as 'prohibited zones for construction', buildings are still being built on these fault lines. Therefore, when carrying out urban transformation, we must first complete the studies that determine the geotechnical features, but unfortunately BursaThese are not over in '. he said.

“STRUCTURES ON THE FAULT SHOULD BE GIVEN PRIORITY”

Drawing attention to the fault lines passing under the settlements in Bursa, Mayor Er stated that these fault lines should be clearly marked and taken into account in urban transformation plans, and said, "Buildings on the fault lines, landslide We need to give priority to the regions and buildings before 2000. It is necessary to prioritize all these and plan urban transformation accordingly. "Now, when we look at the maps, we know the fault line passing through our city on the map published by the ministry, but we need to work on these, not at a scale of 1/1000." said.

“THIS FAULT LINE CAN PRODUCE AN EARTHQUAKE OF 7.3 MAINTENANCE”

Mayor Er stated that an active fault line with the potential to produce a major earthquake has been detected in a newly published study and made the following statements:

“We have a study that started 2 years ago and has just been completed. It has just been published. We have an active fault line that caused the 1855 earthquake, which is 95 kilometers long, starting from Kayapa and continuing to Yenişehir, and has the potential to produce an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3. This work is still not included in the implementation plans and unfortunately, construction on these fault lines continues. For this, we will know the fault lines, landslide areas, and liquefaction areas. If there is a tsunami risk, we will take precautions accordingly. Bursa's first problem is the deficiencies in planning. Planning in Bursa natural disastersWe need to discuss the issues and act accordingly. We have one more deficiency, and that is inspection. It seems that building inspection companies carry out the inspection of ground fault lines, but they are not responsible for this because it is not their duty. It only consists of concrete and iron control. "Either municipalities should do this or ground inspection organizations should be established so that building-ground relations can be ensured."

Noting that in this context, both the municipality, the citizens, local administrations and the state have a great responsibility, Engin Er said, "We can make Bursa safer with short, medium and long-term plans to avoid saying 'Oh no." said.
