MAYOR SEKMEN EXPLAINED THE CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mehmet Sekmen said, “When we look at the history of the world, there have always been changes in the climate. Although there may be permanent effects in periods when human influence is not observed, there has been a return to a state of climatic balance.

"But what is seen in the situation after the Industrial Revolution is that it is now clearly seen that these changes cannot balance on their own," he said. “Changes in climate manifest as major changes in average temperatures in various regions of the world between glacial and interglacial ages, as well as changes in precipitation.

"According to our current knowledge, there have been many changes due to natural factors and processes throughout the 4.6 billion-year geological history of the Earth," said President Sekmen, adding: "Climatic changes in geological periods have not only changed the world geography, especially through glacial movements and sea level changes, but also ecological changes have occurred." It has also created permanent changes in systems. However, since the mid-19th century, a new era has been entered in which human activities have affected the climate for the first time, in addition to the natural change in the climate.

When we look at this new era, it is seen that the atmosphere, which is essential for all living things on Earth, has become harmful after the serious touch of human hands on nature.

Therefore, it is important to take some precautions to protect our Earth and the creatures living on it. The name of the global problem that requires these measures is Global Climate Change.”
