What is the Strategic Plan for US-Iran Tension? Dr. Fehmi Ağca commented…

Director of Üsküdar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Political Science and International Relations (English) and Postcolonial Studies Application and Research Center (PAMER). Lecturer Member Fehmi Ağca evaluated the tension between the USA and Iran.

Dr. noted that the tension between the USA and Iran, which started with the Iranian Islamic revolution in 1979 and continues until today, has caused interesting developments in terms of political consequences. Lecturer Member Fehmi Ağca said, “The US's anti-Iran stance aimed to weaken the political cadres who carried out the Islamic revolution in Iran and cause them to lose power. However, the US-Iran conflict, which has been going on for 45 years, has resulted in the Shiite power in Iran becoming even stronger. The fundamental question that needs to be asked is, does the United States really want the Shiite sect-based government in Iran to collapse, or on the contrary, to become even stronger and more established? said.

“IT SHOWS THAT THE USA IS ACTING IN IRAN'S INTERESTS.”

Reminding that after the Islamic revolution in Iran, the USA and other Western powers encouraged Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein to attack Iran by provoking him and supplying weapons to the Iraqi army. Lecturer Member Fehmi Ağca explained the following:

“The Iraq-Iran War enabled the political team that carried out the revolution in Iran to consolidate its power and gain legitimacy by liquidating the opposition. Ultimately, this war caused the majority of the Iranian people to increase their support for the regime. More importantly, the fact that the Shiite majority, which constitutes the majority in Iraq, seized political power after the second Iraq Operation launched by the USA in 2003, shows that the USA is acting in line with Iran's interests. "It can be said that in the process that continues until today, all kinds of political tensions, conflicts and disagreements with the USA have served to entrench the regime and expand Iran's sphere of influence."

Dr. also stated that the fact that the USA and its Western allies directed their attacks towards Iraq and Syria, which pose a closer threat to Israel, rather than Iran, which was always imposed as an enemy, reveals the political goals of the USA and its basic strategy towards the region. Lecturer Member Fehmi Ağca said, “This strategy is as follows: not to allow any military or economic power to form around Israel, on the other hand, to divide the Islamic world, which is potentially the biggest source of threat to Israel, into two through a militarily strong Iran, and to prevent the Islamic world from facing Western aggression.” It is to prevent the formation of a strong resistance and political unity.” he analyzed.

“IF THIS TENSION ENVIRONMENT IS SUITABLE FOR THE INTERESTS OF BOTH COUNTRIES, IT CAN NATURALLY BE ACCEPTED THAT THERE IS AN IMPLIED AGREEMENT.”

Dr. Lecturer Member Fehmi Ağca stated that the policy followed by Iran against Israel in the face of Israeli attacks on Gaza after October 7, 2023, and the actions it carries out through its affiliated organizations such as Hezbollah, are more likely to be a result of the aggression of Israel and the USA, rather than giving an effective result. He also emphasized that he could not go beyond producing some justifications.

"The statements made by both the USA and Iran that they do not want the conflict to spread throughout the Middle East show that there is a tacit agreement between the two countries." Ağca said, “For this, there is no need for the two countries to make a secret agreement with each other. "If this atmosphere of tension is in the interests of both countries, it can naturally be assumed that there is a tacit agreement." said.

WHAT CAUSES THE CONFLICT ENVIRONMENT BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES?

Dr. noted that the conflict between the two countries provides justification for the US's aggressive policies in the Middle East to ensure Israel's security and provides international legitimacy to a certain extent. Lecturer Member Fehmi Ağca said, “On the other hand, this environment of conflict and tension gives Iran the opportunity to effectively continue its sectarian policies. Thus, Iran, through its affiliated groups and organizations, within the framework of its forward defense doctrine, is trying to reinforce the country's defense by establishing positions and resistance points beyond its borders in foreign countries such as Iraq, Syria and Yemen. If Iran had cooperated with Turkey, which is making intense efforts to protect democracy and human rights, especially in Syria, instead of these expansionist and sectarian policies, the region would not have been torn apart and destroyed by terrorism and civil wars in line with the scenarios planned by the USA and other Western imperialist powers. "By never agreeing to such cooperation, Iran has prepared the ground for US intervention in the region." made his assessment.

Meanwhile, Dr. also stated that Iran's sectarian and expansionist policy is used by the USA as a convenient excuse to achieve its own goals and maintain the fragmented and controversial structure of the region. Lecturer Member Fehmi Ağca said, “In this way, the USA can more easily persuade or force anti-Iran countries to join its side. Therefore, it can be said that the USA has no intention of destroying the Iranian regime. In the face of the Israeli attacks on Gaza after October 7, 2023, Iran's policy against Israel and the actions it carries out through its affiliated organizations such as Hezbollah do not go beyond providing effective results, but rather producing justifications for the aggression of Israel and the USA. . In fact, the statements made by both the USA and Iran that they do not want the conflict to spread throughout the Middle East show that there is a tacit agreement between the two countries. For this, there is no need for the two principles to make a secret agreement with each other. “This atmosphere of tension is in the interests of both countries.” he said.
