Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary, one of Turkey's most important wetlands, hosts hundreds of thousands of migratory birds every year. Located on the borders of Samsun's 19 Mayıs, Bafra and Alaçam districts, with an area of 56 thousand hectares, Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary is one of the most important points where wildlife is protected in Turkey. On April 13, 2016, human intervention in natural life was minimized with the practices carried out by Samsun Metropolitan Municipality in the Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary, which was included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Tentative List. Visitors to the Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary, where positive feedback has been rapidly received from Samsun Metropolitan Municipality's conservation efforts, can only visit the delta with bicycles, electric bicycles and battery-powered vehicles. In this context, it was stated that approximately 2023 thousand people visited the delta in 100.
With the measures implemented, the number of both birds and other wild animals in the delta increases every year, and migratory birds can be observed intensively in the delta, especially during the winter period.
