Bursa Black Fig Awaiting EU Registration

Village-Koop Bursa Regional Union President Osman Özkan announced the development regarding the Bursa black Fig, which has risen to international standards, in the "Real Sesler" program broadcast on Everyone Hears TV. Özkan reminded that in 2018, as Bursa Regional Union, they received the Geographical Indication Registration with the origin name "Bursa Black / Black Bursa Fig / Bursa Black Fig" with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Bursa Metropolitan Municipality.

WE ARE WAITING FOR OUR TURN IN EU REGISTRATION

Özkan announced that the 3-month-long announcement phase has started in the Official Gazette of the EU regarding the application made to the European Union (EU) Commission through Turkish Patent for the purpose of transforming geographically indicated products into added value and bringing them into commercial and economic life, and that they have left a week behind in the suspension process. He stated that it will be internationally registered upon completion of the announcement phase.

Meanwhile, Özkan pointed out that they were able to send the fruits identified with Bursa to the domestic and international markets under the brand 'From Bursa', and said that the partners also helped in marketing relations. Stating that there are 10 cold storages affiliated with the Union, Osman Özkan explained that they can keep figs for up to 42 days and that they are working across the country to store them better.

ON-SITE PRODUCTION SHOULD BE PROVIDED FOR WINTER VEGETABLES

Stating that the main problem of the producer is the market, Özkan said that Bursa farmers do not have problems in producing products because they are conscious enough, but the marketing issue can be overcome with strong cooperatives. Özkan also stated that the problems and losses in shipment can be eliminated by establishing advanced greenhouses of many winter vegetables in Bursa and producing them on-site, adding: “On-site production should be not only in Bursa but throughout the country. "If production is carried out in the provinces, especially in the vegetable channel, in the coming years, costs will decrease and consumers will buy products cheaper," he said.
