142 Percent Increase in School Hostel Fees!

Hostel Fees Increased! In the statement made by Eğitim-İş (Education and Science Employees' Union), "Does the increase in hostel accommodation and meal fees, that is, 142 percent, reflect the real inflation rate?" statements were included.

Does the rate of increase in hostel accommodation and food fees, i.e. 142 percent, reflect the real inflation rate?

Union officials said, "Even studying in a public school has become a serious expense." "Although education is a Constitutional right and services such as nutrition, shelter and transportation are integral parts of this right, our children have become able to meet these needs only within the means of their families." . In the statement made by the union, the following statements were made: "The increases in student hostel prices in the 2024 Central Plan Budget also show what real inflation actually is and how the government, while it should be mobilizing for the housing problem of students, pushes this issue further out of the public domain with each passing day. According to the report we prepared in this context as Eğitim-İş; For 2024, a 142 percent increase is foreseen in the hostel accommodation fee and the cost of a meal provided to education workers and students. At this point, very important questions arise:
–    Does the increase in hostel accommodation and food fees, that is, 142 percent, reflect the real inflation rate?
–    If the real inflation rate is 142 percent, are the expected 2024 percent increase in the minimum wage in 37.7 and the 49.88 percent increase in the salaries of public workers valid for another country?
–    What is the explanation for the gap between the inflation rates of TÜİK, which determines the wage increases for the entire working population, and the increase in accommodation and food prices in hostels? If this is not an admission of how irrelevant the figures given by TURKSTAT are to real inflation, what is?

Nobody of the Orphans...

“Moreover, this economic injustice is unfortunately only one aspect of the issue. Considering that students have to meet their own basic needs such as transportation, course equipment and clothing, as well as accommodation and nutrition, and according to real inflation, it is clearly seen how far education has been pushed out of publicity. Is this country, which has separate palaces built for each season and whose rulers dismiss all kinds of luxury for which the people waste their taxes, with the slogan "the reputation of the state", incapable of putting a pillow under the head of its poor student and a plate of food in front of him? In this Republic founded by a Head Teacher who said "There is no individual to be sacrificed in education", it is unacceptable that our children/young people, who are our future, are ignored and kept away from education due to impossibility. It is unacceptable for students to be left orphaned in this Republic, which Atatürk founded to "have someone for the orphans".

As the head teacher's education personnel, as Eğitim-İş, we will not give up on the questions we asked above. We will not allow the students entrusted to our care to be pushed into the clutches of despair. A secular, scientific, fair and public education for students; It is a right for educators to work for wages worthy of human dignity; we will take it!”
