Selendi Pistachio Will Be Opened to the World with Geographical Indication Registration

Salihli Chamber of Commerce and Industry applied for geographical indication registration to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office for peanuts, whose production has been increasing in Selendi in recent years. It was aimed to increase the production of Selendi Pistachio, which is called green gold and obtained by grafting the terebinth bush that grows spontaneously in nature, with the registration.

After registering Salihli Cherry, Salihli Wood Meatballs and Kula Chickpeas in the past years, Oda applied for registration for Salihli Grape Molasses and Gökeyüp Casserole last year, and made a new application for Selendi Pistachio before the process of these two products was completed.

Salihli TSO, which received its first geographical indication registration for Salihli Cherry in 2008, added Salihli Odun Meatballs and Kula Chickpeas to its geographically indicated products over time. Salihli TSO, which submitted the application files for Salihli Sultani Grape Molasses and Gökeyüp Pottery to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in August last year, also applied for Selendi's pistachios with unique properties, which is also within its scope of duty.

In recent years, there has been an intense demand for pistachio production in Selendi, which is one of the most remote districts of Manisa and made its living from animal husbandry and tobacco farming until recently. Selendi pistachios, which are especially popular with dessert makers from Gaziantep, are preferred to increase the appeal of baklava and similar desserts, especially due to their intense green color.
Salihli TSO, which draws attention with its efforts to increase the value of the products grown in Salihli and the region, will increase the number of its registered products to six with the Selendi pistachio. İbrahim Yüksel, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Salihli Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated that it is of great benefit to register the products produced by the producers with great effort so that they can be exported as well as in the domestic market and attract the attention of buyers, and gave the following information about the registrations:

“In addition to Salihli, we focused on registration studies to increase the value of products specific to Kula and Selendi, which are within the area of responsibility of our chamber. After Salihli Cherry, Salihli Wood Meatballs and Kula Roasted Chickpeas, last year we started the registration protection process for Salihli Sultani Grape Molasses and Gökeyüp Pottery.

The registration process increases the value of the products and is considered more reliable, especially for buyers abroad, thus increasing demand. Selendi Pistachio, the last product we decided to take under registration protection, has different features than its counterparts. Confectioners in Gaziantep make large purchases of this product, which draws attention with its dark green color. "Producers are literally competing with each other to grow this product, which is in high demand."
