Common Misconceptions about Nutrition and Diet

Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit warned about misconceptions about nutrition and diet.

Information pollution about healthy nutrition and diet, especially from social media, causes individuals to have wrong diet practices and unhealthy diets. Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit, who drew attention to the importance of proper nutrition in the summer months when information pollution is at the highest level, shared the wrong information that comes to the agenda very often.

Pointing out that the most common misconceptions are that sugar-free drinks are healthy, Yiğit warned against drinks with sugar-free and calorie-free phrases, and said, "These sugar-free and calorie-free drinks make the body secrete insulin like sugar and stimulate fat storage. Moreover, there is always the possibility of adversely affecting intestinal health," he said.

Hülya Yiğit, pointing to the detox waters that are shared very often on social media, said, “Our liver does the toxin removal process in our body. If these drinks are made fresh, they will provide you with vitamins, minerals and fiber and support your diet. However, it will not deliver what it promises. Of course, drinking these detox drinks instead of sugary drinks will support your liver. The important thing here is not to make these drinks the only source of nutrition.”

Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit emphasized that the perception that gluten-free and vegan products are healthier is also wrong. “Most gluten-free products are actually processed,” says Yiğit, “If they are made from gluten-free flour, there is a possibility that more sugar has been added to improve their taste. For this reason, it is necessary to look at the content on the label of the product, not just these phrases. The fact that the product is vegan indicates that no animal ingredients are used, but these products can be more oily and often contain more saturated fats.

“It is necessary to pay attention to the protein of the food, not the calories”

Talking about whether cornflakes help to lose weight, Yiğit said, “If you prefer those with honey, chocolate and added sugar, on the contrary, you can make you more hungry and provide portion control more difficult. In the morning, starting the day with a breakfast with plenty of cheese and plenty of greens, that is, protein and pulp, will help you control your appetite and control your weight more during the day.” said.

Noting that the most common mistake about diet is to lose weight with calorie control, Dyt said. Hülya Yiğit made the following suggestions:

“This issue is misunderstood by many. It is necessary to look at the fiber and protein ratio of a food, not its calories. For example, the calories of a cheese sandwich are equal to the calories of a chocolate bar. However, their nutrition is different. Therefore, we need to look at the protein and fiber ratio in the food, not the calories on the label.”
