International Forwarding and Logistics Service Providers Association UTIKAD published its fourth sectoral report with its 2022 sector report. Report; It sheds light on the future of the sector by bringing together the activities, transportations, capacity, important developments and relevant legislation of the international logistics sector in Turkey.

UTIKAD Logistics Sector Report 2022, which contains basic information about the logistics sector, which has an important role in Turkey's foreign trade and therefore its economy, draws attention to some important obstacles in front of the sector as well as due diligence, and emphasizes the future potential of Turkey's logistics sector.

Trade routes have changed

In the report, which states that the Russia-Ukraine war dealt the biggest blow to the global economy and logistics sector, which started to recover rapidly after the pandemic, in 2022, it is explained that the war had a significant impact from the energy crisis to the change of global trade routes. The report emphasizes that the war between Russia and Ukraine, which are two important countries in the world in the export of many commodities such as energy resources, grain and food, and which carries out most of its foreign trade activities by sea transport, caused the disruption of logistics operations and the deterioration of supply chains with the effect of embargoes. states that it poses and continues to pose a great risk for the sustainability and development of global trade.

Logistics market exceeds 10 trillion dollars

While the global logistics market size is calculated as 2022 trillion US dollars in 10,68, it is predicted that the development of the e-commerce industry contributes to the development of the logistics industry and the global logistics market size is expected to reach approximately 2032 trillion US dollars by 18,23 with the increase in demand in the e-commerce industry.

The highest foreign trade of the 10-year period

When Turkey's foreign trade is analyzed by years, the highest foreign trade volume in the last 10 years was realized in 2022. In 2022, exports increased by 12,9 percent compared to the previous year and became 254,2 billion US dollars, while imports increased by 34 percent to 363,7 billion US dollars in the same period. In the sector report, export-import data according to the product groups subject to foreign trade, the largest export markets and countries were given in detail.

Load sharing of transport modes

In the report, which includes detailed information on the transportation volumes of the transportation modes in Turkey's foreign trade in the last 10 years; It was stated that in 2022, the transportation and communication sector took the largest share in Turkey's total investment plan. Maritime transport had the largest share in terms of the value of goods transported in Turkey, both in imports and exports. Road transport took the second place in terms of value, while air transport took the third place. Railway transportation, on the other hand, has the lowest share in Turkey's foreign trade.

In the last 10 years, while Turkey's share in export shipments has increased on the basis of tonnage by sea, its share on the basis of value has not increased. It was stated that the highest value of 2013 percent in 35,66 in export shipments by road could not be reached in 2022 either. In the section examining the role of Turkey in transit transportation, it was noted that approximately 2012 percent of the cargo handled at ports in 12 on TEU basis was transit cargo, and this rate increased to approximately 2022 percent at the end of 16, and the rate of transit cargoes on TEU basis increased by 10 percent in 127 years.

Opportunity for the Middle Corridor

It was stated that China-EU shipments along the Northern Corridor have decreased by 40 percent since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and it was emphasized that this situation increased the attractiveness of the Middle Corridor initiative passing through Turkey. It was stated that Turkey had the chance to strengthen its role in transit transportation, and for this, the legislation, customs and infrastructure systems of transit countries should be reorganized to activate the Middle Corridor. It was noted that the development of the Turkish railway network and the importance of intermodal integration emerged in the light of regional developments.

UTIKAD recommendations for the Middle Corridor

• Ensuring compliance with the legislation and infrastructure with the countries in the region,
• Construction of a new line between Kars Logistics Center and Ahılkelek,
• Harmonizing the customs systems of the countries,
• Increasing the capacity of Marmaray for freight transit,
• Providing railway crossing from Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge.

E-commerce volume grows by 3 digits

In the sector report, in which e-commerce is handled as a separate heading, it is stated that white goods, clothing, electronics, furniture, decoration and floristry are among the most preferred products in e-commerce in Turkey; It was recorded that Turkey's e-commerce volume increased by 116 percent compared to the previous year and reached 2022 billion TL in 348.
