Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer gave information about gastroenteritis, which has been on the agenda recently.

“The most common cause of gastroenteritis is viral ones”

Stating that gastrointestinal infections are a group of medical conditions that affect the gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach and intestines, Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer said, “The biggest reason for this may be viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi. The most common cause of gastroenteritis is viral ones. Among the viral ones, it may be mostly due to rotavirus infections in children and norovirus infections in adults. Other than that, it could be bacteria. Rarely, fungi can also cause gastroenteritis.” said.

It is manifested by abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea

Pointing out that the biggest cause of gastroenteritis is the consumption of contaminated food and liquid, Atamer said, “Gastroenteritis can also occur as a result of close contact with people who have gastroenteritis. In the case of gastroenteritis, it usually manifests itself with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If the clinical picture is severe, there may be additional findings such as weakness, fatigue, dizziness, muscle aches, and fever due to fluid loss. warned.

It can be severe in elderly and immunocompromised people.

Noting that gastroenteritis is usually a self-limiting disease, Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer said, “The more fluid loss, the greater the complaint. It is a self-limiting condition that gradually subsides within 24-48 hours. However, if the person is old, has a weak immune system, is overtired and tired, the disease may progress a little more severely. In general, antidiarrheal drugs and antibiotics are included in the treatment, but most importantly, if the clinical condition is severe, taking enough liquid by mouth can reduce the symptoms of the disease with intravenous fluid therapy. he said.

Hygiene conditions must be observed for protection.

Underlining that in order to be protected from gastroenteritis, particular attention should be paid to hygiene conditions, Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer concluded his words as follows:

“Pay attention should be paid to clean food intake, and situations that will reduce body resistance should be avoided. It can also occur when hygienic conditions are insufficient as a result of excessive fatigue and carelessness. It is more common in people who travel a lot, go to places, do not pay attention to the foods they eat, and weaken due to fatigue. Usually, there is no need for hospitalization, but in very advanced cases, it is a disease that can be treated with medication by giving fluid from the veins.
