Acıbadem Dr. Sinasi Can (Kadıköy) Hospital Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist Dr. Ayça Özgen pointed out that the ideal time for the treatment of varicose veins is winter and spring and gave information about 7 effective methods against varicose veins.
Stating that varicose is one of the most common vascular diseases today, Dr. Ayça Özgen said, “Although there is no clear figure, it is estimated that 15 million people in our country suffer from this disease in varying degrees. Again, while varicose veins are diagnosed in 10-15 percent of men in our country, this rate rises to 20-25 percent in women. The reason why varicose veins are more common in women is hormonal changes, especially as a result of pregnancy or the use of birth control pills. she said.
Varicose veins treatment is divided into two groups as intervention to 'superficial capillaries' and 'deep veins'. Today, very successful results are obtained from the treatment of varicose veins. Cardiovascular Surgeon Specialist Dr. Ayça Özgen explains the methods applied in the treatment of varicose veins as follows:
“Sclerotherapy, known as the foam treatment applied to the superficial capillaries, is the injection of drugs into the vein with a needle. After this procedure, radiofrequency treatment is applied to the remaining and thinner capillaries with a needle. After the treatment, patients can get rid of the spider web-like appearance that develops on the legs. In deep vein insufficiency, closed varicose vein surgery or open varicose surgery with radiofrequency is applied according to the classification of varicose veins and the severity of the insufficiency of the veins of the patient. After the operation, both the appearance of the legs improves and the problems caused by varicose veins such as pain, cramps and edema are eliminated.
Cardiovascular Surgeon Specialist Dr. Ayça Özgen explained the precautions you should take against varicose veins as follows:
Exercise your leg muscles: The work of the leg muscles accelerates the blood flow in the veins, thus preventing their enlargement. Therefore, get plenty of movement, regularly walk and exercise if possible.
Stay at your ideal weight, eat healthy: Since gaining weight accelerates the development of varicose veins, it is very important to stay at your ideal weight. In addition, regularly consume vegetable-based and high-fiber foods against the problem of constipation, which can trigger the formation of varicose veins. Get into the habit of drinking 2-2.5 liters of water a day.
Do not consume too much salt: Salt increases the edema in the body and exacerbates the complaints caused by varicose veins. Make sure your salt consumption does not exceed 5 grams per day.
Avoid tight clothing: Choose loose clothing as much as possible, avoid tightening your belt too much, as tight clothing impairs blood circulation.
Take a break every 35 – 40 minutes: Inactivity can cause the veins to expand as a result of slowing the blood flow in the veins. If you work at a desk, get into the habit of moving at intervals of 30-45 minutes, or at least getting up and walking. If you are standing, move your legs and feet often to help return blood from the legs to the heart.
Support your legs with a pillow: Lifting your legs above the level of the heart with a pillow support while resting relaxes the blood circulation and prevents the expansion of the veins.
Avoid hot environments: Hot air and water can cause the veins to expand. Therefore, avoid hot environments such as sauna, hammam and spa. It is also recommended to take your bath with warm water as much as possible.
Dr. Ayça Özgen listed the factors that cause varicose veins as follows:
- Genetic predisposition
- Occupational factors (working in standing or sedentary jobs for long periods of time)
- Pregnancy (high number of births)
- be over 50 years old
- Birth control pills and hormones
