The MEB Search and Rescue Unit, which includes volunteer teachers in Bingöl, will work in areas where it is needed in disasters and emergencies, with the training it received from AFAD.

Volunteer teachers at the Ministry of National Education (MEB) Search and Rescue Unit (AKUB) in Bingöl, one of Turkey's risky provinces for earthquakes, will support the fight against disasters with their professional training.

AFAD Provincial Directorate continues to provide trainings on topics such as earthquake, search and rescue, first aid, incident management and coordination, psychosocial support to members of non-governmental organizations, personnel of various institutions, and volunteer citizens in order to increase their task force in earthquakes and other disasters in Bingöl.

30 volunteer teachers from AKUB, Provincial Directorate of National Education, gained experience with the exercises they carried out in the field after the theoretical training given by experts.

Thanks to the trainings, teachers have reached the level to work in an organized manner with AFAD teams, who have reflex and initiative power in disasters and emergencies, and have a high response speed.

In this context, information on search and rescue, materials used in search and rescue, injured transport techniques, tent setup, rescue from upper floors and wells, and humanitarian aid was given to the teachers trained in the city.

Experienced teachers will also instill disaster awareness in their students and will take part in possible disasters.

Bingöl AKUB Leader Serhat Bürke said that the teams received training on many subjects such as first aid, fire and earthquake. Expressing that their priority is schools, Bürke stated that they provide training and exercises for students.

Noting that their team continues to develop, Bürke said, “We are carrying out these studies under the coordination of AFAD. We aim to be an operational team in the future. We are ready to take charge anytime and anywhere to support AFAD.” said.

Samet Şekercioğlu, Provincial Directorate of National Education Workplace Health and Safety Unit Coordinator, also stated that serious trainings are given for volunteer teachers to intervene in emergencies and gain competence.

Expressing that they carried out these trainings in coordination with AFAD, Şekercioğlu said, “AFAD is always with us. Our friends receive training and exercises in order to be able to intervene effectively in all kinds of emergency situations. The fact that there are teachers from many branches in the search and rescue team also raises awareness in this context.” used the phrases.

“Teachers Need to Raise Awareness”

Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey Cevdet Yılmaz Secondary School Deputy Director Şahin Gazioğlu stated that he participated in the activity voluntarily and stated that the city is located at the intersection of the North Anatolian fault line and the East Anatolian fault line, so they should be prepared for an earthquake.

Stating that schools should be ready in this sense, Gazioğlu said: “It is not clear when and where the earthquake will occur. That's why we need to be alert and ready at all times. We worked on the field by applying theoretical knowledge, especially with the trainings we received. We will also apply these in exercises in schools. The teacher is the social engineer who shapes the society. I hope that our initiation and creation of this awareness will create a pioneering role for other institutions as well.”

“Teachers have been an important force for us”

AFAD Search and Rescue Technician Veysi Birtek noted that they continue to cooperate with various non-governmental organizations in order to assist their teams.

Birtek said, “Our paths crossed with the MEB AKUB team. We had a two-week training. They have the necessary equipment. Teachers have been an important force for us.” he said.
