We are protecting and keeping Karaburun alive as the biggest fragrance garden of the Mediterranean.”

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyerparticipated in the 22th Karaburun Narcissus Festival organized by Karaburun Municipality between 23-4 January. Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality hosted the program hosted by Karaburun Mayor İlkay Girgin Erdoğan. Tunç Soyer's wife Neptün Soyer, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Mustafa Özuslu, Republican People's Party (CHP) Women's Branch Chairman Aylin Nazlıaka, Kemalpaşa Mayor Rıdvan Karakayalı and his wife Lütfiye Karakayalı, Torbalı Mayor Mithat Tekin and his wife Fatma Tekin, Cesme Mayor Ekrem Oran's wife Nuriş Oran, Garrison Commander Major Ali Eker, municipal bureaucrats, council members, representatives of political parties, cooperatives, producers, headmen and citizens took part.

“The Mediterranean's largest fragrance garden”

The President, who works on the promotion of local products with the vision of "Another Agriculture is Possible" Tunç Soyer“I am very happy to meet you again at the 4th Narcissus Festival in Karaburun, the home of the narcissus flower. While many parts of our country are covered with snow and we feel the winter to our bones, we are experiencing a miracle today. The miracle of the daffodil flower. Every time I come to Karaburun, I feel like I am in the biggest fragrance garden of the Mediterranean. Each of the small fields hidden among the steep rocks and maquis here is a unique scent garden. What remains of us from past ages? Great palaces or war cries? The masters who scorched the world for their momentary glory? There is none left! Do you know what's left? The scent of olive trees and narcissus flowers remained. They are stronger than all of us with their skinny bodies. And look how they still manage to bring us together today.”

“Let's start a conservation project for local hyacinths and sim flowers as well as daffodils”

Saying that the scent gardens of Karaburun are very special, Mayor Soyer said, “It is special because we see the traces of another ornamental plant culture in these gardens. While seasonal ornamental plants stand out with their flamboyant colors and are produced in many parts of the world, Karaburun has chosen a different path. Instead of large and showy species, the people of Karaburun have grown plants with small flowers but strong odor. Not only daffodils, but also purple and pink hyacinths blooming right after them have become a unique part of Karaburun fragrance gardens. Snow-white glitter flowers with less odor and which few of us know. They also grow in these gardens. We have to continue our efforts to keep the daffodils of Karaburun alive in order to keep all these bulbous plants alive. I request from our President Ilkay, let's do a conservation project for local hyacinths and sim flowers as well as daffodils. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality will be with you in this regard. We are ready to give the daffodil bulb support we provide to our farmers in Karaburun to protect these species. Because only if we can achieve this, we can preserve and keep Karaburun alive as the biggest fragrance garden of the Mediterranean”.

“We will tell the story of Izmir”

Stating that he will continue to do everything in his power to raise the bread of the citizens, to increase welfare and to distribute them fairly, together with the district municipality in Karaburun, Mayor Soyer concluded his words as follows: We are determined to protect the daffodil flowers that tell us that another agriculture is possible. In the presence of Ilkay Mayor, I would like to thank all the Karaburun Municipality team for their work that strengthens Izmir's 'Another Agriculture is Possible' vision.”

“Daffodil is work for us, it is work, it is work”

Karaburun Mayor İlkay Girgin Erdoğan said, “Our fourth festival, which we have organized after two years, plays a very important role in the promotion of our agricultural city, Karaburun. Narcissus means more than a flower for us Karaburun people. It is the product of a sacred effort. Although our cultivation areas have decreased, they have been among the most important livelihoods of our country for years. The daffodil is not just a flower for us; it is work, it is work, it is labor. Nergis Karaburun, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mr. Tunç Soyer and with the support of his precious wife Neptün Soyer, it is being planted in more and more fields every year. In the past period, we distributed 120 daffodil bulbs to our producers. Dear Tunç President, our efforts are rewarding. Now we have reached two thousand acres in terms of cultivation area in Karaburun and Mordoğan. We will plant daffodils in larger areas in the coming years. Our duty is to present this blessing to our citizens," he said.
