Indian Railways is putting in a new project to reduce the carbon footprint of trains and create awareness. Within the scope of the new project, the upper part of the train running on the railways is covered with solar panels and the train can produce about 20 kWh

Solar panels installed on the top of the 1600 horsepower train will generate electrical energy from solar energy. The generated energy will be used in the processes such as lighting of the train, operating the door, and checking passenger information. In addition, energy will be stored in a 120 Ah battery pack.

300 panels of 16 W on the train have the capacity to produce approximately 20 kWh of energy per day. Storing unused energy in battery banks means that the train's electrical systems can operate at night without the need for diesel. 6 trains operating in this way can save 21000 tons of diesel per year.

This project, which is the first, is expected to become widespread throughout the country. In the next six months, the number of environmentally friendly trains that produce electricity with solar panels will reach 24. It is stated that a train operating in this way will reduce the carbon footprint by 9 tons per year.
