Sirkeci Train Station

Sirkeci Station: II. It is the train station built on the European side of Istanbul during the reign of Abdülhamit. It is one of the two main stations of TCDD in Istanbul, together with Haydarpaşa Train Station.

There was a small station temporarily built in the place where Sirkeci Train Station is located. Granite marble and stones brought from Marseille Aden were used in the construction of the current station building, which was planned by the German architect August Jachmund. The station, whose foundation was laid on February 11, 1888, was completed in 1890 and the building was opened on November 3, 1890 by II. Ahmed Muhtar Pasha made it on behalf of Abdülhamid.

There are two clock towers on the front of Sirkeci Train Station. On the side facade of the building, the date when the station was put into service was written according to both the rumi calendar and the Gregorian calendar.

The surroundings of Sirkeci Station, which was very close to the sea in the years it was built, has undergone a great change over time. The restaurant of the station becomes the meeting point of well-known writers, journalists and other individuals in the 1950s and 1960s. Orient Express departing from Paris has taken passengers to this station for many years and picked up passengers from here.
