Pedestrian Path Lighting Increases Pedestrian Safety in Bursa

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality introduced another application to the city that will increase comfort and safety in pedestrian traffic. The pedestrian path lighting system, which is activated to increase pedestrian safety at signalized intersections, is activated when the green light turns on for pedestrians and illuminates the pedestrian path. In this way, a second warning effect is created for both drivers and pedestrians.

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, which produces radical solutions to the transportation problem with new roads, bridges and intersections, rail system and public transportation investments in Bursa, has introduced another application to the city that will increase comfort and safety in pedestrian traffic. Within the scope of the pedestrian lighting system project, which was commissioned to increase pedestrian safety at signalized intersections, pedestrian luminaires were installed at pedestrian crossings at 20 different intersections and streets in Osmangazi, Nilüfer, Yıldırım and Gürsu districts. The activation of the lighting system synchronized with the signal lamps at the signalized intersection creates a second warning effect for drivers. The lighting system, which is activated during the change of pedestrian lights, is effective for pedestrian safety by creating a second warning effect for pedestrians who are currently looking at their phones or not following the signal light. The project enables drivers to see citizens who are uneasy due to darkness, especially at intersections and streets used in the evening and at night, more easily on the pedestrian path. Thanks to the lighting system mounted on overhead signal poles, the visibility of the person on the pedestrian path increases. The project, which is designed for the safety of pedestrians, is planned to be expanded to different parts of the city.

Electrical Engineer Zafer Kavak, working at Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Traffic Branch Directorate, stated that the citizens had positive feedback about the pedestrian road lighting system that works synchronously with signalized intersections and said, "The pedestrian road lighting project works synchronously with signalized intersections that we have carried out within the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Traffic Branch Directorate." an adaptive system. Namely; We illuminate the pedestrian path for pedestrians through the lighting fixtures we install on signal poles during the green light period. In this way, we ensure that our pedestrians can cross the street more easily and safely. Using adaptive lighting instead of a fixed lighting system creates a different warning effect for both pedestrians and drivers. The lighting system, which is activated with a red lamp for vehicle drivers, creates a second warning effect in addition to the signal lamp. "Again, pedestrians waiting at the light who do not follow the signal lamp, look in a different direction, look at the phone or do something else, become aware that the pedestrian crossing has started with the activation of the lighting system and they can pass safely," he said.
