Nuclear Power Plants Fair and Summit Held in Istanbul

The 4th Nuclear Power Plants Fair and the 8th Nuclear Power Plants Summit brought together 950 visitors in Istanbul. Cooperation agreements that will enable Turkish industrialists to be a part of the nuclear industry and 168 commercial matching meetings were held. SMRs, the innovative technology of nuclear energy, were discussed at the summit.

The 4th Nuclear Power Plants Fair and the 8th Nuclear Power Plants Summit (NPPES), where the role of nuclear energy in achieving sustainable economic growth and zero carbon targets were discussed, hosted 950 visitors and 149 companies. Important players of nuclear energy from Spain, India, China, Russia, South Korea, Italy, Denmark, Bulgaria, Germany, Slovakia, Croatia, France, Congo, Czech Republic participated in NPPES. Companies that want to be suppliers and subcontractors in the nuclear energy sector held 168 commercial matching meetings within the scope of NPPES.

The 4th Nuclear Power Plants Fair and the 8th Nuclear Power Plants Summit, organized by the Ankara Chamber of Industry (ASO) and the Nuclear Industry Association (NSD) with the support of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, took place on 8-9 June 2022 at the Pullman Istanbul Congress Center.

Turkish industrialists are now a player in the nuclear industry

Ankara Chamber of Industry President Nurettin Özdebir said, “The Nuclear Power Plants Fair and Summit is an important platform that mediates our local industrialists to meet with important players of the nuclear industry and to make commercial matching negotiations that will enable them to get a share from this value-added sector. Approximately 550 thousand parts are used in the construction of a nuclear power plant and job opportunities are offered to many sectors, especially construction, electrical-electronics and machinery industry. Our Turkish industrialists have highly developed competencies in this field, and as ASO, we support our industrialists to produce in accordance with the conditions sought by the nuclear industry. The number of our companies that have started to become suppliers in nuclear energy continues to increase in this direction. Many of our companies from the ASO NÜKSAK – Nuclear Industry Cluster Project participated in NPPES this year and had the opportunity to meet with the opportunities in both Akkuyu NPP and 53 nuclear power plant projects that are under construction abroad.”

SMRs will form the intersection of renewable energy and nuclear energy

Nuclear Industry Association President Alikaan Çiftçi made the following assessments: “At NPPES this year, it was emphasized that nuclear energy capacity should be increased in a way to ensure continuous supply in the coming days and support sustainability for both energy supply security and a zero-carbon economic growth model. In this context, it was discussed at the Summit that the share of small modular reactors (SMR) and micro-modular reactors (MMR) that can bring together renewable energy and nuclear energy with hybrid models, which are considered the energy sources of the future, is expected to increase in nuclear energy investments. More than 70 SMRs and MMRs are currently in development around the world. We anticipate that interest in SMR and MMR investments, which are accepted as innovative technologies of the nuclear industry, will increase due to their economic, flexible and advanced security infrastructure. NPPES will continue to bring our industrialists together with the issues and opportunities on the agenda of the nuclear industry.”

5 important cooperation agreements were made at NPPES

This year, 5 important agreements were made at NPPES for commercial collaborations that play a key role in the development of the nuclear industry. Ankara Chamber of Industry, Rosatom Technical Academy, Russia Technical Decision Group and FİGES signed 3 important cooperation agreements to mediate the development of the nuclear industry. Nuclear Industry Association signed an important agreement with Russia's Nuclear Industry Construction Complex Organizations Association (ACCNI) in order to develop mutual dialogue and business opportunities. An important cooperation agreement was signed at NPPES between the Russian Nuclear Industry Construction Complex Organizations Association and the Congo Global Cooperation Association to work together on projects worth $2 billion.

Issues on the agenda of the nuclear industry were discussed at the summit.

During two days, 6 special topics and important developments in the field of nuclear energy both in Turkey and in the world were shared in 7 sessions at NPPES. In addition, a virtual tour of the Novovoronezh NGS was held. Session topics at NPPES were: Modern Trends and Experiences in the Construction of Nuclear Power Plants, Nuclear Infrastructure Development and Regulatory Regime, Construction Process at Akkuyu NPP, Association of Nuclear Industry Construction Complex Organizations (ACCNI) Special Session, SMR in Advanced and Emerging Nuclear Markets and MMR Development Activities, Procurement Processes in Akkuyu NPP Project, Main Contractor's Activities in Akkuyu NPP Project, Nuclear Expertise Session in Spain.
