Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır announced that the registration of Ayaş Tomatoes in the European Union (EU) has reached the final stage.

Stating that 12 geographical indication applications were made to the European Union Commission by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT), within the scope of the International Geographical Indications Mobilization launched last January, Minister Kacır stated that among these applications, the registration of Ayas Tomato has reached the final stage.

Kacır said, “Ayas Tomato, one of the most special agricultural products of our Capital, which will be registered in the European Union Official Gazette after the completion of the 3-month announcement phase, will take its place among our geographical indications registered in the EU. We will continue to work at full speed for the registration of our geographical indications at the international level.” said.

GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION PUBLISHED AT THE EU COMMISSION WITHIN THE SHORTEST TIME

Stating that for the first time in 2023, geographical indication applications were made to the EU Commission by selecting 12 products from different regions of our country directly by TURKPATENT, Kacır stated that Ayaş Tomato is the geographical indication application of our country published in the shortest time before the EU Commission.

13 PRODUCTS REGISTERED IN EU

Stating that our country has 13 registered geographical indications in the EU, Kacır said, “The objection period for Milas Oil Olives, which is at the announcement stage, will end on 16 August, and for Ayaş Tomatoes on 4 November. Before the end of 2023, the number of our registered geographical indications in the European Union will increase to 15.” said.

Turkey's EU registered Antakya Kunefe, Aydın Fig, Aydın Chestnut, Bayramiç White, Çağlayancerit Walnut, Edremit Olive Oil, Gaziantep Baklava, Gemlik Olive, Giresun Chubby Hazelnut, Malatya Apricot, Milas Olive Oil, Suruç Pomegranate and Taşköprü Garlic as well as geographical indications. There are 2 geographical indication applications that are in the announcement stage and 42 geographical indication applications whose review processes are ongoing.
