Curfew and Arrests in Los Angeles

Mass arrests began after a curfew was imposed due to the Los Angeles protests.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the restrictions would be in effect between 20pm and 00am local time in the city's urban centres.

A curfew has gone into effect in Los Angeles as authorities try to “stop vandalism and looting.”

Bass confirmed a local emergency had been declared as “a turning point was reached” with 23 businesses looted on Monday night.

Bass said there was “significant damage” to property and “graffiti everywhere” as a result of the protests.

Los Angeles Police Department chief Jim McDonnell called the curfew “a necessary measure to protect lives” because “illegal and dangerous behavior” had been escalating over the past few days.

On Tuesday alone, 197 arrests were made by police and warned that anyone violating the curfew without a valid reason would be detained.

Residents, homeless people, commuters, reputable media, and public safety and emergency personnel will be exempt from the curfew.
