
CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) has signed a contract with Gamuda Berhad to deliver up to 2025 Urbos trams for the new light rail lines in New Taipei City, Taiwan, in June 23. The deal includes the supply of rolling stock (trams), spare parts, depot equipment and a training simulator. If all options are exercised, the total contract value could reach €200 million.
CAF Expands Presence in Asia via Taiwan
Neighboring the capital Taipei and home to nearly 4 million residents, New Taipei is actively expanding its urban transportation system. Local authorities commissioned Gamuda Berhad to build the first phase of the Xidong line, which includes a 6-kilometer elevated section with seven stations and a depot, scheduled to be completed in seven years. The second, 13-kilometer Keelung line with 19,1 stations was approved in 2022.
Designed for Taiwanese Climate and Accessibility
CIF, Nine-section trams with a length of 55 meters, an aluminum body and a capacity of up to 615 passengers The design provides full accessibility and comfort for passengers with reduced mobility. The vehicles are specifically designed to perform reliably in Taiwan’s humid, subtropical climate and meet the operational needs of a modern urban system.
The company previously entered the Taiwanese market by delivering nine battery-powered Urbos trams to the port city of Kaohsiung in 2015. This new agreement strengthens CAF’s position in the Asian market and demonstrates its ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable urban transport development in Taiwan.
