Waste Heat Gives Life to Flowers in Samsun

Samsun Metropolitan Municipality continues to set an example with its environmentally friendly projects and sustainable waste management. Solid Waste Regular Storage Facilities, which were put into practice by the Metropolitan Municipality for the purpose of disposing of solid waste without harming the environment and including it in recycling processes, ensure that an average of 840 tons of waste is disposed of every day. At the same time, flowers produced by utilizing waste heat in the facility decorate the city.

Implementing projects for the green future of Samsun, the Solid Waste Regular Storage Facilities affiliated with the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality ensure that an average of 840 tons of waste is disposed of every day. Thanks to the processing of incoming waste in the recycling facilities within the facility, approximately 4 tons of waste are recycled annually and added to the economy. Recycling processes not only protect the environment, but also ensure that it is converted into economic value.

Aesthetic contribution to the city with flower production

Samsun Metropolitan Municipality also exhibits a different example of environmental awareness with the “Our Waste Becomes Flowers” project, which has won an award from the Healthy Cities Union. With this project, a greenhouse is created by using the waste heat generated in the regular storage facility and 2 million flowers are produced in this greenhouse per year. These flowers are used in the city's landscaping and environmental arrangements, contributing to the aesthetic structure of Samsun.

Electricity production from waste

Methane gas, which is produced by waste stored in a regular storage facility, is burned to convert it into energy in order to prevent harm to the environment. As a result of this process, an average of 49.000.000 kWh of electrical energy is produced annually. This amount is equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 25 households. Thanks to the electrical energy obtained by evaluating solid waste, 21 tons of CO600 emissions are prevented annually. In addition, the cutting down of approximately 2 trees per year is prevented through the same process.

Environmentally friendly municipality

Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Halit Doğan said, “Samsun is rapidly advancing towards becoming a model city in every field. At this point, recycling and zero waste studies have a very large and important share for us. As the Metropolitan Municipality, we are implementing studies that prioritize environmental sustainability and resource efficiency in the field of waste management. Our Solid Waste Regular Storage Facilities are a concrete reflection of this vision. Here, solid waste is managed in the safest way and included in recycling processes without harming our nature.”
