UK and South Korea Form Next Generation Satellite Partnership

BAE Systems, based in the United Kingdom, and Hanwha Systems, based in South Korea, are joining forces to develop a multi-sensor satellite system with advanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities for international markets. The memorandum of understanding will combine BAE Systems’ ultra-wideband radio frequency (RF) sensors with Hanwha Systems’ space domain expertise in next-generation synthetic aperture radar (SAR).

Advanced ISR Capability Combining RF and SAR Technologies

The main objective of this strategic collaboration is to create an integrated satellite system using various sensors to collect RF and SAR data. The collected data will be will be analyzed using machine learning with processors on the satellite and thus securely derived insights and intelligence will be provided. In this way, it is aimed to provide more accurate and faster information flow in both military and civilian areas.

In this context, BAE Systems Launching the first low-orbit satellite cluster Azalea in 2025 The Azalea mission will significantly enhance domestic and international markets’ ability to understand space-based, space-derived and space-mediated threats and hazards. The company is working with a number of partners around the world to achieve this goal.

Rachael Hoyle, BAE Systems’ Digital Intelligence Space Director, said: “Bringing together Hanwha Systems’ expertise in SAR satellites and our space background represents an exciting opportunity to advance space-delivered ISR capabilities for international markets. We look forward to building this relationship and advancing space technologies together.”

International Cooperation and Economic Contribution

UK Industry Minister Sarah Jones also supported the partnership, saying, “The UK and South Korea are already world leaders in the space industry and this new partnership is exactly what we need to develop cutting-edge products and open up new international markets.” Jones emphasized that modern industry strategies aim to further elevate the space sector, creating new investment and jobs in future industries, and that this is part of the government’s Plan for Change.

This collaboration represents a significant advancement in space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. The combined expertise of BAE Systems and Hanwha Systems is expected to deliver more sophisticated and effective solutions to global security and defense needs.
